Grief engulfed Rugaaga village in Keihangaara sub county, Ibanda district on Tuesday after a 76 year old woman was poured with acid on her face and parts of chest by her own grandchild.
The old woman was identified as Miria Barireeta who was sitting in her sitting room when her grandson John Mwesigye aged 25 years approached her pretending to have come to greet her.
It is said that after Mwesigye had accomplished his mission using a bowl which contained the acid substance which he poured on the face of his grandmother tried to run away , leaving the old woman in great pain lying on floor in the hands of God. Some residents who heard the old woman shouting for help rushed to the scene only to see Mwesigye coming out from the house. They organized transport and rushed Barireeta to Ibanda Hospital where she was declared dead after two hours.
The residents who spoke to www.mknewslink.com news website, said the deceased had wrangles with the suspect Mwesigye .Later Mwesigye after sensing danger tried to run a way ,but was over poured by the residents who handed him to Police.
The District Police Commander, Mr Denis Ochama confirmed that Mwesigye was arrested and when the investigations are complete, will be produced in court. Mr. Ochama also said cases of acid in Ibanda district are on increase because of family wrangles and are mainly between married couples.
