Security has been tightened around Tooro Palace in Fort Portal Tourism City following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The Resident City Commissioner, Asimin Nasike, has assured the people of Tooro and other mourners of their safety, while urging the public to follow the kingdom’s guidelines and avoid spreading unverified information about the King’s death.
Asimin Nasike, the Resident City Commissioner for Fort Portal Tourism City, noted that the Office of the President is mourning with the Tooro royal family and the entire Tooro Kingdom following the passing of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Nasike, who is also the head of security in the city where the Tooro Palace is located, said security has been heightened around the palace and other key areas to ensure a peaceful mourning period.
She said the security team is working closely with the kingdom authorities to ensure the King receives a well-organized send off.
Nasike was speaking during a press conference held at the palace, where she urged the public to comply with the guidelines issued by the kingdom during the mourning period.
She also cautioned the public against spreading rumors and false information regarding the circumstances surrounding the King’s death, saying people should wait for official information from the medical report.
Meanwhile, the First Deputy Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom, Harriet Nyakake appreciated Tooro subjects and other mourners who have travelled to the palace to stand with the royal family.
She said their presence demonstrates love and solidarity with the kingdom during this difficult period
Omusuga Kamurasi Charles noted, according to Tooro traditions and cultural norms, he is now in charge of the kingdom and all major decisions should be made after consultations with him.
He assured the people of Tooro that the palace remains open to everyone wishing to come and pay their respects to the late King.
He further commended President Yoweri Museveni for his support and guardianship of the Tooro Kingdom, noting that cultural institutions were restored in 1993 under the NRM government.
Richard Rwabuhinga , the elected chairperson of the organizing and preparations committee, said Tooro mourning traditions provide for nine days of mourning following the death of the King.
He added that the kingdom has already started observing the cultural norms, including suspending the singing of the kingdom anthem and flying the kingdom and other flags at half-mast.
He revealed that statues depicting lions, which symbolize the King, as well as photographs of the late monarch, will be covered until his burial.
Rwabuhinga also confirmed that President Museveni has officially been informed about the King’s death and said the central government is expected to support the preparations for the royal send off.
He assured mourners that security and peace will be maintained at the palace throughout the mourning period.
