In Kabale—
Eight Senior Four students at Kigezi High School in Kabale Municipality have been arrested and detained at Kabale Central Police Station following a strike that reportedly left school property damaged.
Kigezi High School Head Teacher Abraham Akampurira said the incident occurred on Tuesday night, involving 11 students who had previously attempted to leave the school premises without permission.
Akampurira said the students had been apprehended on Saturday while attempting to escape from the school and were subjected to disciplinary proceedings before being handed over to their parents on Monday.
He alleged that the students later returned to school Tuesday night and attempted to incite other learners and disrupt school activities, prompting the administration to seek police intervention.
According to Akampurira, the students were targeting the school’s security arrangements, which are intended to prevent learners from leaving the premises without permission and ensure their safety.
He said police responded after the school sought assistance from the District Police Commander, helping to restore calm and apprehend some of the students involved.
Akampurira added that normal school activities resumed on Wednesday morning, with students attending prayers before proceeding to their usual lessons.
He said the incident did not result in significant destruction of property, although identifying and separating the students allegedly involved presented a challenge.
Some residents living near the school, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they heard what sounded like gunshots on Tuesday night, leaving them frightened until around 3 a.m
However, Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime said the incident resulted in the destruction of school property, including window glass and one closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera.
Tumushime described the incident as a minor strike, saying police responded swiftly and launched investigations into its cause.
He confirmed that eight students were being held at Kabale Central Police Station, while officers continued to pursue other suspects believed to have participated in the unrest.
Police have maintained their deployment at the school to restore calm and prevent further disturbances.
Tumushime said the continued presence of security personnel was intended to ensure that normal school activities continued uninterrupted and that other learners were not affected by the incident.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with further arrests possible.
