Residents of Bushenyi have been called upon to conserve the environment and desist from natural resource degradation.
This call was made by Vincent Katate the Bushenyi District Environment Officer during an exclusive interview with this reporter at mk newslink.com head office in Bushenyi where he warned the public against planting eucalyptus tree species in wetlands.
Katate noted that western region is likely to face seasonally changes due to the high degradation rates of natural resources such as forests wetland.
He added that destruction of these resources interferes with the formation of rainfall which may result to prolonged dry seasons or abnormal rains.
Mr. Katate said that in both situations, crop productivity becomes low thus increase in prices due to low food supply. He noted that high prices on food come with famine and poverty which are likely to increase crime rates.
He said that swamp reclamation results into poor drainage which lead to floods that come with diseases such as Cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, among others.
He further explained that all government interventions and programmes such as irrigation, operation wealth creation, water and electricity supply among others are all connected to swamps as a natural resource.
