10 UGANDAN FISHERMEN KIDNAPPED BY CONGOLESE MILITIAS ON LAKE EDWARD
Tension and fear are mounting at Rwenshama landing site on Lake Edward in Bwambara Sub County, Rukungiri District after suspected Congolese militia kidnapped 10 fishermen.
According to residents, the suspected militias kidnapped thefishermen yesterday morning at around 7:00 am as they returned from their routine fishing expedition.
Some of the kidnapped fishermen include; David Mucunguzi, Innocent Twinomujuni ,Shabul Nabasa, Jackson Tumuhamye, Benjamin Tusasibwe, Nicholas Sunday, Kenneth Kabasharira Nicholas Tumwesigye, Patrick Bwiho and Jackson Musinguzi.
One of the fishermen at Rwenshama Landing Site Mustapha Aribariho, told our reporter that the victims had gone to the lake with six boats to check on fishing nets they had trapped earlier when they were kidnapped.
“The militias emerged and put them on gunpoint and only one boat was later released before the militia crossed back into Democratic Republic of Congo,” Aribariho narrated.
He however said that the relatives of the kidnapped men are now living in fear and worried about the lives of the kidnapped men and said that Ugandan security is yet to update them about efforts being
done to rescue the victims.
When contacted, Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner Dan Ayebazibwe Kaguta said that a Security meeting was held last evening and a statement about the matter would be given today.
This is not the first time the militias are kidnapping fishermen at Rweshama Landing, in May 2018, the same militias attacked the landing site and kidnapped six fishermen.
