Bunyarugu Development Sacco in Rubilizi district has celebrated 25 years of existence and boasting of making a net surplus profit of over UGX1Bn in last year, 2024.

During the celebrations to mark the silver jubilee which were held on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at St. Michael secondary school playground, Mr. Philly Matsiko, the chairman, board of directors revealed that this was a milestone worth celebrating.

In his speech, Mr. Matsiko expressed deepest appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the 30 founder members led by the late Mr. Jack Busingye who was the main brain behind the Sacco’s formation and the subsequent board of directors, staff and members that joined later.

“A heartfelt appreciation also goes out to our partners who have supported us over the past 25 years. In deed we treasure your contributions which have helped us strengthen our Sacco’s growth,” Mr. Matsiko said.

He also commended and very much appreciated the former and current board of directors for their hard work and dedication towards the continuous existence and steady growth of the financial institution.

The Sacco which started in 2000 with just a group of 30 people has grown from a single branch in Nyakasharu town council and boasts of three branches. Kyambura and Kitagwenda complete the list of branches.

According to Mr. Matsiko, the celebration was just a dream they always harboured. “Bunyaruguru dev’t Sacco remains steadfast in its commitmemnt in transforming members and empowering communities to be champions of economic transformation,” he added.

But according to the Sacco’s general manager, Ms. Gumidiriza Manuelina, for any successful journey, there must be analysis on strength, weakness, opportunities and threats, combined together in different proportions.

And because of that, she said a lot of effort has been exerted on the opportunities and strengths to mitigate weakness and threats to the business over the past years.

During the celebrations, members won themselves gifts which included a brand new motorcycle, a Fressian cow, bicycle, TV sets, mattresses and many more.

Plus Two High School in Bushenyi has defied all odds in last year’s Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations after all the 104 candidates who were registered for the final national examinations performed exceedingly well, passing in Result 1, and all qualified to the UCE certificate.

Despite all the rigorous challenges that came with the new curriculum the school still performed excellently well to attain the high results.

In her congratulatory message to students, teachers and parents, the school’s head teacher Ms. Linnie Tumwebaze wrote; “I would like to congratulate the Board of Directors, Administrators, Staff, Students, Parents and all well-wishers of Plus Two High School Bushenyi upon the excellent performance in the UCE 2024 UNEB results.”

Plus Two High School has maintained its high performance in national examinations by UNEB both in the entire western region and in the whole country at large.

In the new Lower Secondary Curriculum in Uganda, the letter grades (A, B, C, D, F) are converted into points as follows:  A: 5 points, B: 4 points, C: 3 points, D: 2 points and E: 1 point.

These points are then summed up to give a total score, which is used to determine the student’s overall performance. For example, if a student gets: A in Mathematics, that is equal to 5 points, B in English (4 points), C in Science (3 points). Their total score would be: 5 + 4 + 3 = 12 points.

 Police in Kanungu district are hunting for a man suspected of beheading his father over a land dispute.

The suspect identified as Erias Nahabwe, is accused of murdering his father, Bagambana Nyansio, 75, a resident of Kanjara Cell, Southern Ward, Kanungu Town Council.

It is reported that on February 4, 2025, Bagambana woke up feeling unwell and wanted to seek treatment at Katate Health Center IV. He asked his only son, Erias, for financial assistance, but Erias refused. Frustrated, Bagambana then demanded his land documents, intending to sell part of his land to cover his medical expenses.

Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, told journalists on Thursday that the son again refused his father’s request. At around 11:30am, the elderly man proceeded to Katate Health Center IV, while his wife went to a nearby bar.

Maate further stated that at around 7:00pm, when the wife returned home, she found her husband lying dead on his bed, his head severed. A blood-stained machete, suspected to have been used in the killing, was found beside the body.

The area chairperson, Twesigye Koronerio, notified the police, who visited and documented the crime scene. A police canine (K-9) was deployed and tracked the suspect’s trail to his home, but had already fled.

The body was taken to Katate Health Center IV for a postmortem examination.

Meanwhile, the deceased’s herdsman is also on the run for unknown reasons.

Investigations are ongoing as police work to apprehend the key suspect.

Mbarara city town clerk Assy Abireebe Tumwesigire has today, Tuesday, January 28, 2025, officially handed over office to his successor Justine Barekye after three years of service to the city.

Abireebe who was posted to Mbarara city in 2022 was last month posted to Mbale city to serve in the same capacity. He has been replaced by Justine Barekye who has been the town clerk of Soroti city for the past six months.

In his farewell speech, Abireebe commended the city’s political leadership and the technical team for the team work that made it possible for the development of Mbarara city.

He explained that the city has been able to enhance its local Revenue which in turn is boosting development.

Abireebe noted that revenue collection has been revamped over time from the period he was posted to Mbarara city from UGX3B in the financial year 2020/2021 to UGX7B in the 2023/2024 financial year.

In her acceptance remarks, Justine Barekye, the new city town clerk requested the city political leaders and the technical team to work together towards further and continuous development of Mbarara city.

Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi, the mayor of Mbarara city, praised the outgoing city town clerk for his contributions to the development of Mbarara as a city.

He told the new city town clerk that Mbarara city, being one of the rapidly growing among all the new cities, she should expedite her work to meet the increasing demand for services.

Akim Twinamatsiko, the Assistant Resident City Commissioner for Mbarara City South, pledged to collaborate with the new town clerk to advance the development of Mbarara City.

A prisoner convicted for defilement has emerged as the best candidate at Mbarara main prison in the just released 2024 Primary leaving examinations (PLE), and is now aiming for secondary school education.

The results released on Thursday January 23, 2025 showed that Daglous Taremwa aged 28, scored 9 Aggregates and passed in first division.

The same results also saw three other inmates passing in division one with 12 Aggregates and 20 others in division two. Ten came in 3rd division while more three prisoners had themselves appearing in the 4^th division.

According to Winnie Musanyana, the head teacher at Mbarara Main Prison Primary School, they successfully registered 37 candidates from three stations. These were Mbarara Main Prison, Kakiika prison and Bushenyi Prison.

She credited this achievement to hard work and thorough preparation of the candidates before and during the examinations period.

Musanyana also noted that they did not have any female candidates this year due to the absence of female teachers in the women’s section adding that those available only teach lower classes.

Daglous Taremwa the top-performing candidate, credited his success to the dedication of the prisons staff and expressed his ambition to become an engineer.

Amon Nayijuka the other prisoner who scored 12 aggregates praised the prisons staff for providing scholastic materials before and during the examinations and shared his aspiration of becoming a leader.

There was excitement among the Pupils of Parental Care Nursery and Primary in Bushenyi District and Students of Ntare School in Mbarara city as both schools won the National Speech and Debate Championship for primary and secondary categories.

The 12th National Speech and Debate Championship 2024 for both Primary and secondary schools was held at King’s College Buddo’s main auditorium in Wakiso District.

The finals saw Parental Care Nursery and Primary School Bushenyi win their fourth national junior speech and debate championship after Mbarara municipal school from Mbarara city and this year’s win was the third national title for Ntare School.

“I want thank the kids they really prepared for this day and the school for always supporting us, winning four in a roll is not simple we must double our efforts because many will be targeting us in the near future” said Mr Desmond Tayebwa the debate patron at Parental Care Nursery and Primary school Bushenyi.

He said team work, dedication, hard work and believing in Jesus for blessings, teachers who are very competent and hungry for results are some of the core principles of their success saying competing at that level deserves a lot of commitment.

The win by Parental Care and Nursery Primary School Bushenyi in the junior category was sparked off by skills of serious debate on the future of learning, where the School stood firm in their belief in the power of stem of education.

On the other side to win the competition, Ntare School from Mbarara city beat Holy Cross Lake View from Jinja to join an exclusive club of winners.

This year’s championship was under the theme Transparency, Accountability and Anti Corruption in commemoration of International Anti corruption day with an aim of creating awareness on how corruption has changed society values to worse.

The western region was represented by a number of both Primary and secondary schools and these schools include Parental Care Primary School Bushenyi in the Primary, Mbarara municipal School, Banya Tereza from Fort Portal in junior category.

Others are Ntare School, Mary Hill, and Immaculate Heart Nyakibare in Rukungiri District in secondary school category

About Parental Care Primary School Bushenyi:

Parental care and Nursery school Bushenyi located in Bushenyi town started in 1988 as a nursery school  and it graduated over the years and breaking its own records in a number of competitions, in 2023 the school represented Uganda in the all African spelling Bee competition in Blantyre Malawi.

In 2023 the school was the winner of Pan African Primary schools debating and Public speaking in Nairobi Kenya.
