The Minister for Local Government, Hon. Balaama Barugahare, has raised concern over corruption, embezzlement of public funds, shoddy and incomplete government projects, misuse of government offices, and the alleged sale of government land in the Rwenzori region.
Barugahare was speaking during a press conference at Mountains of the Moon Hotel in Fort Portal Tourism City yesterday, following his three day visit to Bunyangabu, Bundibugyo and Kasese districts.
The Minister also accused some Resident District Commissioners of colluding with rich individuals to torment poor residents, while raising concern over the alleged sale of government land.
Barugahare further revealed that the sale of government jobs is also widespread, citing Kasese where one government job can allegedly be sold to as many as ten people, with each person paying between two and three million shillings.
He explained that it is not within his mandate to write interdiction letters to the implicated government workers, but said the respective Permanent Secretaries will follow up the allegations and conduct investigations.
The Minister added that his campaign against corruption is progressing well, saying 26 files have already been sanctioned in the districts he has visited, while noting that the fight against corruption in the Rwenzori region is just beginning.
