HEAVY POLICE DEPLOYMENT STILL AT KABALE UNIVERSITY FOLLOWING FRIDAY VIOLENT STRIKE

IN KABALE—
Police have maintained heavy deployment at Kabale University since
students and lecturers mounted a violent strike on Friday last week.
The students went on rampage carrying placards demanding
for immediate resignation of the Vice chancellor Prof Joy Constance
Kwesiga accusing her of mismanaging the university.
The students demanded why they have not had lectures since they
reported this semester, lack of toilets and the closure health unit
yet they contribute 20,000shillings each. Their strike came at a time
the lecturers were protesting nonpayment of their salaries for the
last eight months. Since Friday, security took charge of the
university.
On Saturday, while addressing the media the Vice chancellor Prof Joy
Constance Kwesiga said that by today Monday, the university was to open and
operate normally. However when www.mknewslink.com reporter visited the university
found heavy deployment of police and most students were loitering in
the compound.
The Guild president Kabale University says that they came to study as
they were informed but no lectures took place. He also questions
why the police was heavily deployed yet it was usual studying.
The Deputy Vice chancellor Prof. Allen Babugura says that the
university opened oday tmorning and it is operating as usual. He however
says that they called for security because they are not yet sure of
sanity at university.
The Kigezi region police spokesperson Elly Maate says that they
maintained their deployment because they are not certain on plans of
the students. He says that they will withdraw after the university has
solved issues raised by students and lecturers.
