Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) on Thursday released the 2018 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), showing a slight increase in the overall performance of students.
The results read out by the UNEB Secretary Mr. Daniel Odongo indicated that the male candidates outperformed their female counterparts.
Mr Odongo revealed that 13% of the boys passed in Division 1 (41604) compared to 10.5 % of the girls (35529)
Up to 42.7% of the boys, he said, passed in Division 2 compared to 40.6% of the female candidates.
According to the UNEB Secretary, more female candidates sat for the 2018 PLE exams than boys, a trend that has been increasing for the last 4 years.
Odongo said that, out of the 671,923 pupils that sat the 2018 exams, 48.3% were boys, whereas 51.7% were girls.
Over the last years we have witnessed the gap between boys and girls reducing, to a point where it was 50 50 and now over the past few years were are seeing the girls continuing to edge the boys, Odongo revealed.
In terms of performance by subjects, the learner performed best in the English language, which according to the UNEB Secretary, Mr Odongo, has been an area of challenge.
Social studies and Science also saw improvement especially science at the distinction level.
In English and Maths, performance is poor when candidates are asked to attempt questions that require problem solving or to express themselves
Speaking at the release event which was presided over by Education Minister Janet Museveni, The UNEB Chairperson Mrs Mary Okakwol, reported an increase in the overall number of pupils that registered and sat the exams which grew by 3.9% compared to 0.8% in 2017.
Okwarol attributed this growth to the district leaders who have heeded the advice of Minister Janet not to put a lot of financial pressure on parents trying to register their pupils.
