In Masindi–

In a bid to prevent sugar cane and bush fires, Masindi district
leadership in partnership with the district security committee have
put in place tough measures to ensure that they eliminate fires which
take place every dry season in the district.

Every dry spell Masindi district faces rampant fires which always
leave Kinyara sugar factory and the sugar cane farmers counting
losses.
Addressing a stake holders meeting on fire management at district
chambers today, Godfrey Nyakahuma the Masindi Resident district commissioner, said that as security measure they have instructed the police not to give police bond to a person arrested for torching sugar cane adding that they have also gone an extra mile and engaged the chief magistrate to ensure that any person arrested for the same act is put on remand until the case is concluded.

Nyakahuma added that they are not regretting the deployment of the
UPDF and the police in the sugar cane fields of Kinyara sugar factory
noting that they are doing this to safeguard Uganda’s economic
interest.

Speaking during the same meeting, the district chairperson;
Cosmas Byaruhanga , said that as the district leadership,
they have come up with a mechanism whereby someone in need of setting fire will first have to apply through the chairperson LCI by filling
forms generated by the district.

He added that this will help them understand every fire being
generated in the district and find a way of managing it.

Byaruhanga who also doubles as the chairperson, Masindi district sugar
cane out growers Association said that since December over 100
hactares have been burnt.

Richard Olanya, the OC fire Brigade advised the security agencies and
the district leadership to form fire vigilante groups in every village
and empower them on how to manage fires at the grass root level
arguing that this will help combat unnecessary fires.

In Sheema–

One person has died on spot and another survived with severe injuries this afternoon when a sand quarry slid and covered them at Muyenje; in Kihunda parish,Kagango sub-county, Sheema district.

Good Samaritans removing the dead body from the scene.

According to an eye witness who preferred anonymity, the sand quarry slid when the two were excavating the sand at around 12:00PM.

By the time when our reporter reached the scene, both the dead body and the survivor had been retrieved from the sand quarry.

The dead was only identified as Amon and the survivor as Aron Katonera.

Katonera was rushed to hospital while in critical condition while the dead body was handed over to relatives for burial arrangement.

Uganda’s Ambassador and Deputy head of Mission in Brussels; His Excellency Franklin Ruhinguza Katungwe has challenged Ugandans to apply for scholarships in Masters and PHDs in Beligium and Netherlands.

Ambassador Katungwe who sits in Brussels is also in charge of Luxembourg.

Talking to www.mknewslink.com managing editor at his home in Bushenyi town yesterday,Katungwe revealed that there are scholarships in Universities of Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium thus urging Ugandans to apply online and grab the opportunity.

Katungwe who also sits at EU headquarters also commended Uganda for setting up a good refugee policy which allows refugees to access free medical services and education while in Uganda.

He further said Brussels emphasizes value addition and value chain on Ugandan products.

He also revealed that the number of tourists from Belgium, Luxembourg and Netherlands who come to Uganda has increased since he started representing Uganda at the Embassy there.

He further disclosed that Uganda’s revenue increased drastically due to foreign tourists and Ugandans who work in different sectors the three countries.

Religious leaders in Kigezi region are demanding for sacking of the
Governments spokesperson Ofwono Opondo for defaming Church of Uganda leaders.

Appearing on NBS Television frontline program last Thursday, Ofwono accused the Archbishop of Church of Uganda His Grace Stanley  Ntagali and other church leaders of land grabbing, when police rescued them from an irate mob that attacked them while coming from a tour of the one-square mile land that belongs to the church in August 2016.

The land that was under contention at Ntawo in Mukono district was being developed by the Uganda Christian University (UCU) on behalf of the church.

Ofwono who is also the Executive Director of Uganda Media Centre said that Christians no longer believe in condemnation of church leaders on amendment of 102b from constitution of Uganda by parliament, since they also want money from President Yoweri Museveni.

The Archdeacon of Bubaare Archdeaconry Diocese of Kigezi Rev. Can. Jack Katarishangwa says that it was an insult for Ofwono to accuse the
archbishop of land grabbing yet he was inspecting the church land.  He
wants Ofwono sacked and replaced with competent leaders who will promote church-state relationship.

The Chairman of Kigezi Interreligious council Rev. Fr. Gaetaon Batanyenda
says that it’s unfortunate for a government spokesperson to spread malice and blackmail on leaders after condemning parliament for amending article 102b from constitution which was against the people’s will.

He says that Ofwono should apologize to Archbishop Stanley Ntangali, Church of Uganda, and Inter-religious council or be sacked.
