Police in Mbarara are holding a 29-year-old student for allegedly staging self kidnap so as to extort money from his parents.
Evan Ariho a second year student at Bishop Stuart university doing diploma in animal health who was demanding for 5m ransom was arrested and detained at Mbarara central police after tracked his calls.
According to Samson Kasasira the Rwizi region police spokesperson, Atwine was apprehended after tapping his calls and found out that he was posing a self-kidnap in Ntungamo district.
By the time of Atwine’s, parents had managed to send 2m out of 5m on his phone which the police recovered as well.
However, Atwiine said in defense that he wanted to expand his firewood business in Kishenyi Mbarara municipality thereby faking a kidnap to raise the capital.
However, Kasasira laments on how these victims have been set free before court without giving them serious punishment.
Three self-kidnap cases have been registered since the beginning of 2018.

The former security minister, Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde, has finally given his verdict on his sacking earlier this year after serving for only 21 months.
He also revealed that his sacking was not because he was incompetent noting that he could bounce back to Cabinet anytime.
He added that there are many options in politics other than being a cabinet minister.
President Museveni fired Gen Tumukunde together with Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura, at the height of public spat between the two.
The feuding, according to some insiders, had stymied cooperation between police and intelligence agencies and threatened to derail national security agenda.
Gen Tumukunde was replaced with Gen Elly Tumwine, a war veteran, who credits himself for firing the first shot that, began the five-year National Resistance Army (NRA) rebellion that brought President Museveni to power in 1986.
Gen Tumukunde had previously served as the UPDF 4th Division commander, Chief of Military Intelligence and later Director General of the Internal Security Organisation.
He ran into trouble over his public opposition to the scrapping of presidential age limit in 2005. He would later be remanded for years on charges of spreading harmful propaganda, for which he was acquitted, and military misconduct, for which he was convicted and sentenced to a severe reprimand in 2013. After rehabilitation, he played a key role in President Museveni’s re-election campaign, neutralizing former premier Amama Mbabazi’s political machinery and was named a minister after the ballot.

Workers at Kinyara sugar factory limited on 21st May 2018 laid down their tools in protest of poor working conditions.
The workers who spoke on condition of anonymity explained that they are working under terrible conditions something which has forced them to stage a sit-down strike such that their cry can be addressed.
A worker who declined to be named revealed that previously they would spend six months on probation before being confirmed as permanent workers but now it was extended to three years. He told www.mknewslink.com that what irked them was the human resource manager telling them to wait for someone to die for one to become a permanent worker.
He also added that they are tired of uncertain changes and dismissals which are not called for. He also explained that a permanent worker is entitled to a medical insurance which caters for an employee and the family members but they are disappointed to see being told to foot their bills while treating themselves and the family members.
Workers accuse the Moses Kabira, the human resource manager and Sam Rugambwa the agriculture engineering manager of causing these troubles to them and want them out of office over their bad conducts.
Efforts to get a comment from Kinyara management were futile since Kirunda Magoola the Communications manager Kinyara was not in office.
