The Vice Chancellor of Victoria University Dr. Krishin Sharma in an exclusive interview talked to Darious Magara a senior Reporter with www.mknewslink.com news website about their latest developments at the university, Scholarships, fees structure, staff strength among others. Below are excerpts
QN:What are the aims and objectives of Victoria university?
The core function of Victoria University is the pursuit of academic excellence. This commitment has seen us receive notable recognition from National council for Higher education as one of the rapidly progressing universities in Uganda.
QN:What do you offer and what makes Victoria University unique?
We offer a wide variety of courses and our qualifications are designed to meet the needs of the market place. We have established links with a number of Professional and Corporate companies and constantly review our portfolio to ensure that it meets both students’ requirements and current sophisticated employer needs. Some are self employment program; Our courses focus on, and aim at imparting skills to students and this will enable them venture into self-employment areas and sectors of the economy. But more so our methodology of teaching and the state of Art facilities stand out. This does not mean that we do not follow the norms but we keep our system student centered.
We make sure that our Graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills required for a successful career in their chosen field. Input is provided from researchers, current market and industry practitioners, professional bodies to ensure that the curriculum and content are up-to-date and relevant. The University has a dedicated Career Service team which is always at hand to assist students on embarking on their chosen career after graduation.

QN:What do you offer in science courses, any new plans in the science
courses you are offering?
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN HUMAN NUTRITION AND DIETETICS (BHND)
Dietetics is a profession which applies the science of nutrition in the maintenance of health in each of the life cycle stages as well as to the dietary management of various disease conditions. Our 4 year dietetics degree program equips graduates with the knowledge and skills to practice in any of the 3 key focus areas of the profession, i.e. Therapeutic Nutrition, Community Nutrition and Food Service Management.
Duration 4 Years
BACHELOR OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SCIENCE
The EHS curriculum provides a fundamental knowledge of environmental health within a broad basic sciences background, with emphasis on the evaluation and control of major environmental health problems such as water supply, waste disposal, food hygiene, occupational health, air pollution, and others. Duration 3 Years
BACHELOR OF NURSING SCIENCES
The curriculum is designed to meet the challenges of healthcare delivery. The course is highly demanding and designed to use community-orientated, evidence and skills-based approaches in order to be highly responsive to the needs of urban and rural communities.
Duration 4 Years
QN:How do you plan to beat completion among universities?
We believe that quality education will sell us as an institution. If you have good staff; programs, courses and teach them well that will be used to beat our competitors.
QN:What do you say about your fees, do you wish to announce any new fees
structure?
Our fees are fair if you compare with the high quality education services we offer. The Vision of the founders of VU are not so much focused about big numbers or quantity but rather quality. We pay for research of students and help them to access good education, internship and apprenticeship and as well some job placement.
“Our fees are not high compared with the education service and costs involved in offering it” he stressed. Students have lectures, tutorials and cases studies.
To the difficult students; if you do not understand the way we teach, we teach you the way you understand” he added.
VU University is a student centre place of learning where students are given a free environment to study and they relate with lecturers not with a master slave attitude. We have hundreds of students and more are being enrolled in various programs.
QN:Do you have a hospital that can support the medicine courses that you
offer, or are you planning to establish one and where?
VU has established partnerships with UMC Victoria Hospital, Mulago, Uganda China Friendship hospital and other organizations where our students do practical work.
QN:What should students expect from your library and ICT centre?
VU ICT is fully developed that computers and softwares and internet are used at the campus. Each student who is enrolled is given a free laptop to be used in his/ her studies. The library is well stocked with computers books and other studying materials.
QN:Sports and co-curricular activities are vital, what do you have to
offer to this?
We have sports and they are done at Kampala parents School. Students play football, hand ball, swimming and basket ball among others.
QN:Do you have Scholarships and Victoria university?
Through the Ruparelia Foundation, Victoria University seeks to provide an opportunity to all interested applicants to have a value added higher learning experience with a range of 30% -50% scholarship across all courses and open to all applicants from all countries.
QN:What are the deliberate intentions of the scholarships?
• To promote equity in the communities by supporting strong and talented students acquire the necessary academic qualifications
• Grow studentship to specific programmes
• Boost and attract talents to Victoria University
• To help address the skills gap in the economy
• To address challenges of poverty through the avenue of human capital development.
The Ruparelia Foundation works to improve and promote health, education, sports, general welfare, and poverty eradication, improve livelihoods, support the welfare of wildlife and preservation of the environment by fostering partnerships among businesses, corporations, with the government, non-governmental organizations and individuals.
QN:Who is who on your teaching staff?
Some of the teaching staff include; Dr. Stephen Lawoko dean of faculty of health sciences, Dr. Terry Kahuma Dean of sciences and Technology and Fred Kasirye acting dean of humanities and social sciences.
QN:Are you planning a job placement day?
We are planning with some organizations that they will come and conduct interviews at campus and pick the best students for job placements. This has been done before for students doing nursing sciences degrees but we will this time round widen the scope to cover various programs. Some of our best students are placed after internship when they demonstrate their great employable skills and some in the Ruparelia Group of companies owned by Sudhir.
