In Ibanda—

Drama erupted at Bugarama Catholic Center church in Ibanda district on Sunday as the Christians who had come to attend the mass found the main entrance to the church closed.

The church was closed by some of the worshippers who blamed the leadership of Ibanda catholic parishfor postingtwo catechists from one family to head the same church. The people in question are Varerian Barugahare and his wife Fulegensiya Nayebare.

The angry Christians alleged that since the catechists come from the same village and some members belong to their clans, its difficult to solve their problems.
Rev. Fr. J.B. Turyaheebwa the parish priest has on several times warned the congregation about taking laws into their hands.

He noted that did not see the reason why they chose to lock the doors of the church and lock out the worshippers on Sunday.
Some of the worshippers opted to sit on the verandah outside the church while others decided to go back home.

In Kabarole—

Kabarole district leaders have dismissed the distortion trending on social media that they have sold off the public land in Kyembogo DATIC, Busoro Sub County to Operation Wealth Creation Program.

The district chairperson Richard Rwabuhinga says distortive messages have been trending on social media and radio stations claiming that the district chairperson, MP Muhanga, district speaker and councilors have finalized plans to sell the public land to Operation Wealth Creation Program.

This was during the district council on Monday that witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the leaders of Rwengaju parish and OWC coordinator Salim Saleh .The people came up with 13 priority projects that they think will transform the parish into a true model.

Rwabuhinga assured the people that though the district doesn’t have the title for the 100 acres of land, it was allocated to them by the president through the ministry of agriculture.

Margaret Muhanga commended the leaders for standing firm to pass the resolution for the establishment of the industrial park despite the enemies spreading propaganda on social media against such developments. She observes the need for the leaders to always take radical decisions saying investors will come with expertise and machinery while Kabarole people provides raw materials and labour.

In Kampala—

The Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence yesterday sent away lawyers representing Mr Yusuf Kawooya after they had made an appointment to see him at the CMI headquarters.

Kenneth Kakande, the Democratic Party lawyer, who is also representing Kawooya confirmed the incident but said they were denied access to see their client.

We have been at CMI, we made an attempt to meet Kawooya, but we were unable to see him because the people who were there told us the officers who should have granted us the access to meet him were in a closed-door meeting, Kakande said.
He said CMI officials had confirmed that they were holding Mr Kawooya at their facility.

They have confirmed keeping him and said the closed-door meeting is to decide whether to release him today or not, he said.
Asked why the army would release a man they violently arrested without producing him in court, Kakande said that it is like that the army is concerned with the aspect of the manner in which he was arrested and their public image which has angered many Ugandans.
Ms Sharifa Nakitende, a sister to Kawooya, said they are still struggling and trying to secure her brother.

Kawoya was brutally arrested on Colville Street in the city centre last Thursday by soldiers in civilian clothes who hit him with gun butts and dragged him to a taxi with a fake number plate.

In Kampala—

The General Court Martial in Makindye sentenced two men to 40 years imprisonment after pleading guilty of attacking Muto Hardware in Masaka town, killing two people and robbing huge sums of money.

On June 1 at Muto Hardware along Buddu street in the heart of Masaka town at around 8pm, unknown assailants stormed the place killing Moses Musinguzi, the security guard and another employee before robbing Shs 435 million.

Later, seven people including Rtd Cpl Paul Kiwanuka,54, a retired UPDF soldier ,Derrick Jumba,40,John Bosco Waliggo,43,Kizza Bukenya Matiya,Stephen Kayemba,Julius Tweheyo,30 and Gerevazio Kankaka 25 were arraigned before the army court and charged with two counts of murder and two for aggravated robbery.

On Monday, the military court sentenced Derrick Jumba and Matia Bukenya Kiiza to 40 years imprisonment after pleading guilty to the charges on their own plea.

The duo who had earlier denied the charges on Monday changed their plea to admit the charges of shooting dead Moses Musinguzi, robbing his AK47 which had 30 rounds of ammunition, shooting dead Sharif Kiggundu a casual labourer, working at the hardware and also robbing shs435 million.

They told court that Jumba was given shs15 million after completing the mission but his colleagues run away with the balance but Kiiza said he was given shs200 million as his share .

The army prosecutors led by Maj.Raphael Mugisha told court that the duo were not first offender after being convicted of other offences earlier asking court to give them a deterring punishment.

In response, their lawyer Siena Owomugisha asked court to hand them lenient sentences because they are first offenders and hadnt wasted courts time.

In his sentence, the General Court Martial chairman, Lt. Gen. Andrew Gutti said despite pleading guilty, the punishment was meant to be a lesson to deter others intending to commit similar crimes.

He said each of the offences carries a maximum punishment of death but had decided to reduce them to forty years.

This court recognizes that the two convicts pleaded guilty and thus saved the court time, they are young men, have families and are remorseful but however this courts notes that two lives were lost due to actions of the duo and others,Lt.Gen.Gutti said.

The deceased as well had families to look after and their right to life was taken by actions of the convicts.

The army court said that the owner of the hardware lost huge sums of money to the group yet such crimes are very rampant and there was need to curb such.

This court finds sentence of 40 years and three months imprisonment as appropriate for each account for each convict,Gutti said.

He noted that he had considered the time the duo had spent on remand.

Gutti said that the punishments are to run concurrently.
