Nine young innovators in Bunyoro region have been rewarded by Uganda Small Scale Industries Association-USSIA rewarded for their efforts in fighting
unemployment and contributing to social economic development of the
country.

Under the Bunyoro Youth Innovation Awards 2018, only nine innovators were rewarded from over 100 entries across the seven districts of Bunyoro region following a vigorous appraisal, assessment and evaluation for applicants.

Robert Kaahwa, who runs a carpentry workshop dubbed RK furniture and
molding workshop in Kiryatete, Hoima town emerged the overall
winner for this years awards.

Kaahwa who studied catering and formally an employee at Kolping hotel
was rewarded with cash prize of sh1 million, a plaque and a certificate for his outstanding work.

Cisy Nambuzi won the PWD category, Rosemary Wabyona aged 19 was rewarded as the youngest entrepreneur, Charity Kenyange emerged as best female innovator, Ismail Senteza as best youth employer, David Muliisa. Others awarded were Gloria Kyaliisima and William Kasaija.

Officiating the awarding ceremony at Glory summit hotel on Friday, Mary Mugasa, the municipal mayor challenged the youth innovators to improve on their marketing strategies saying she was shocked to discover that there are many youth innovators whose service remain unknown.

She said they need to exploit all marketing avenues like using social media, radio,social events and others revealing that there are many youth producing goods but are not known.

Veronica Namwanje, the executive secretary Uganda Small Scale Industries Association said the program was aimed at promoting competition and quality products by youth innovators in Bunyoro.

She asked innovators to embrace formalizing their enterprises,embracing learning new skills among others.

In Kampala

The Inspectorate of Government will carry out a verification exercise of the assets and liabilities declared by Dr Louis Kasekende, the deputy governor of Bank of Uganda.

In a letter dated October 18, 2018 addressed to Kasekende, signed by Annet K. Twine on behalf of Irene Mulyagonja, the IGG said that Victor Acidiri and Doreen Tusiime have been appointed to oversee the exercise.

Sources in the IGGs office told www.mknewslink.com that the verification exercise is to ascertain whether the assets and liabilities declared by Kasekende are a true reflection of his wealth. The exercise was supposed to be carried out seven days from the date of the letter but sources said it is still ongoing.

The verification follows leakage of information and reports that the deputy governor has various properties in and around the city centre that were not declared as per the Leadership Code Act

Some unconfirmed reports put the number of properties to 64.

For Many years people that border with Queen Elizabeth national park have been in conflict with wild animals which stray and destroy their gardens. This scenario forced some residents to sleep in shift houses to guard elephants and Buffalos against crossing to their gardens and devastate cash crops like cotton that is mainly grown in the area.

Tumushabe Deus a resident of Kyenzaza village in Katerere County Rubirizi district is one of the people faced with this challenge. Tumushabe says for the last twenty five years, he has been sleeping outside and that at times is threatened by violent elephants which try to get closer to him at night but is always rescued by the game rangers after making an alarm.

Similar sentiments were shared by Atuhirwe Sarah the secretary Kyambura farming cooperative society who said that although they spend 10 million shillings every season to hire people to guard their gardens but animals still sneak in and destroy the crops.

This change has since forced government to install an electrical fence around the national park so as to stop the animals from crossing to peoples gardens. The development has been welcomed and relieved a person like Tumushabe who believes that this time round he will be able stay at his home and get some good harvests as well.

However Ephraim Kamuntu the minister of Tourism said the solution to this human wildlife conflict is that people should comply with the countys vision of transforming the economy so that they move out of subsistence economy of dependence on land and become dependent of social service sectors and manufacturing industry.

He also said a bill to strengthen conservation effort will soon be passed and will contain a provision of stiff penalties for anybody involved in illegal wildlife trade besides compensating the destroyed property and even people whose lives were lost as a result of animal attack. He was speaking at the launch of the installation of a ten kilometre electrical fence in Kirugu sub county Rubirizi district.

George Owoyesigyire the head of community conservation directorate said that much as they try all efforts they will still have to face challenges like illegal grazing and poaching of elephants, buffalos, crocodiles, hippos and Chimpanzees.
