Uganda national teachers union (UNATU) an umbrella of all teachers in Uganda has declared a strike beginning tomorrow Monday 20th may2019.
The strike according to leaders of UNATU led by Philbert Baguma the general secretary comes as a result of government’s failure to increase teachers’ salaries.
Baguma noted that he gave government 90days which ended today and government has not given any response.
He noted that if MPs can ask for increase of their salaries because of high standards of living “how about teachers who earn peanuts” Baguma said.
This information was revealed today in joint press conference of various workers unions in Ntinda Kampala.
Mr. usher Wilson Owere, Chairman national organization of trade unions (NOTU), warned the government to stop being arrogant and take workers’ concerns seriously.
Mr. Hassan Lubyayi Mudida a general secretary of local government workers union warned that they support the teachers’ strike and where necessary may lay down their tools and join the strike.
