Police in Kisoro have in detention a 30-year-old man who he was found in possession of a 43kgs elephant Ivory.

Munyaribanje Richard, a resident of Bunagana T/Council Kisoro district was arrested on Wednesday after a tip-off by some residents at Bunagana.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi regional police mouth piece said that inquiries to establish how and where Munyaribanje got this ivory are underway at Kisoro police station vide SD 64/20/11/2019.

“We have already started interrogation into his case to really understand how he got the species and the chain on which he operates within this illicit business,” Mr Maate said.

In January 2019, Uganda authorities seized 750 pieces of ivory and thousands of pangolin scales being smuggled from neighboring South Sudan in one of the largest seizures of wildlife contraband in the East African country.

Two Vietnamese were arrested over the contraband that had been concealed inside pieces of timber carried by three freight containers, the Uganda Revenue Authority said.

There are around 5,000 elephants in Uganda today with a very low reproduction rate (one calf per female every 8.6 years).

Masindi

Cosmas Byaruhanga the Masindi LCV chairperson and his members of the executive yesterday boycotted the handover function of the Chief administrative officer John Nyakahuma.

The function took place on Thursday evening at the district gardens amidst tight security.

Speaking to Byaruhanga, he explained that he could not attend the handover function organized by a section of district officials who have their own interests instead of the district.

A week back, the district chairman issued a letter indicating that the handover would take only 30 minutes and it would be in chambers but not in an open place as there were no funds to organize a big function.

Byaruhanga also said that they never received any formal invitation from the organizers of the function.

Byaruhanga expressed happiness over Nyakahuma’s departure adding that sanity is going to come back since the person who has been antagonizing service delivery has left.

Since Nyakahuma came to Masindi in 2018 there has been a serious fight between the two accusing each other of incompetence.

In September, Masindi district council recommended for John Nyakahuma’s transfer and the closure of his office which the district chairperson implemented.

Speaking during the handover function at the district headquarters, John Nyakahuma the outgoing CAO noted that the one year he spent in Masindi was a tough time for him.

He explained that when the district council unlawfully closed his office, he lost his laptop and voucher accountability forms he had compiled to give to the auditors.

Danson Yiga Mukasa, the incoming CAO called for team work during his tenure saying that fights impact negatively to the local people since service delivery is crippled.

 Nyakahuma has been replaced with Yiga in Gomba district.

In Kasese

A heavy stone has collapsed on a woman in Kasese and killed her instantly.Melina Biira 58, met her death last evening at around 7pm following a heavy down pour that befall Bughinanulha village in Muhokya Sub County, Kasese district and caused soil erosion.

It is reported that the stone collapsed on the house she was residing in and killed her instantly.

Lawrence Bwambale the village chairperson said the stone hit Melina on the head leading to porous bleeding and her death.

He called on government to give them tree seedlings to plant on hilly areas as one way of mitigating such natural calamities.

Ivan Masereka the son to the deceased told our reporter that her mother was in good health before the incident took her life.

The incident brings the number of people killed in Kasese by landslides and mudslides to 7 including five children in a period of two months.

In Bushenyi

Local leaders in Kizinda Towncouncil, Bushenyi district are bitter with the self-proclaimed tycoons who connive with thieves and threaten peoples’ lives and property.

Talking to www.mknewslink.com on Thursday Evening, some of the leaders said their efforts to fight criminality is yielding nothing because thieves have even started dealing with some security operatives.

Mugumya Kahangye, the Chairperson LCI Kizinda said that top security operatives including the Resident District Commissioner, District Police Commander among others should come to their rescue as the condition is getting worse.

Mugumya said that once the thieves are arrested, the tycoons pay the police and they are released hence increasing theft threats in the area.

Mugumya suggested that some of the police officers  at Kizinda police post should be transferred instantly as residents have complained in his office about their over stay at the post which has given them a chance to connive with the criminals.

In Bushenyi /Kizinda

Local leaders in Kizinda Town council in Bushenyi district want the government to close down churches that have no legal Operational documents.

This comes shortly after Amazing Grace Church belonging to Rovinah Ntegyereize was accused by some residents that mysterious activities are carried in within the church.

The chairperson LC1 Kizinda Mugumya Kahangye said Amazing Grace church is being questioned because inside it there are monuments of Jesus on the cross, Virgin Mary and yet it is not a catholic church.

Aron Arinaitwe Kanyangoga, the Councilor LCIII representing Nyabubare Sub county said that he is looking for signatures from the residents to petition the responsible authorities so that the church is monitored and closed if possible.

Kanyangoga cited an incidence where the church proprietor Rovinah Ntegyereize lost his Biological son Collins Kamanzi 21, who was doing his UACE Examinations at Nyabubare Secondary School.

The councilor said that the boy is alleged to have died in the church not at Kampala International hospital as claimed by the mother (Rovinah).

However, Rovinah Ntegyereize who said her praying place works on Tuesday and Friday condemned the local leaders arguing that they are conniving with her rivals to tarnish her name.

Rovinah said the church is legally operating and denied allegations of any reported death in her church
