The Chairperson of the inter-religious council of Kigezi region, Rev.Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda has called on the Government of Uganda to keep schools and places of worship closed until coronavirus is defeated.
Batanyenda noted that schools and places of worship present situations where social distancing won’t be observed at all yet this puts communities at risk of contracting Covid-19.
Fr. Batanyenda while speaking to www.mknewslink.com reporter on Monday evening said Uganda should pick lessons from Europe and America where thousands have died yet they have better health care systems.
“Look at South Korea that dared to open schools, the virus spread in a short time like world fire before they closed schools again. Look at America, the virus is killing hundreds of thousands each day. I think there isn’t any need to open schools be it candidate classes or finalists till the virus is defeated” Fr Batanyenda said.
President Museveni on March 18 imposed restrictions on worship places, schools and social gatherings to prevent the spread of coronavirus, no congregation prayers have since been allowed.
While leading Idd-ul-Fitr prayers recently at Old Kampala Mosque, Mufti Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, called for opening of places of worship during his televised address.
Sheikh Mubajje said the world needs prayers during this difficult time of the coronavirus pandemic.
“We want the government to consider the following; opening houses of worship. Prayers are among those essential activities as our motto goes” he said
On Sunday, Kampala Catholic Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga also emphasized that places of worship are the only places where people can run to seek God’s guidance, protection and intervention because of the current challenges facing the world.
His Anglican counterpart, Archbishop Samuel Kaziimba said as church leaders, they are ready to abide by the standard operating procedures set up by the Ministry of Health and President Museveni to contain the spread of corona virus.
Uganda has recorded 457 corona virus cases since the outbreak.
More than 6.27 million corona-virus cases have been confirmed around the world, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. More than 375,500 people have died, including more than 105,000 in the US. At least 2.7 million have recovered from the disease.

A 29 year old police officer attached to Masindi Central Police Station in Masindi district who had tested positive for Covid-19 has been discharged from Hoima Regional Referral Hospital after 30 days.
It was alleged that he had been infected through contact with cargo truck drivers at Karuma and later admitted at Hoima Covid -19 treatment center where he has spent 30 days.
His final results over the weekend indicated that he had recovered from the disease.
He is the Second patient to recover from the facility.
Dr. Lawrence Tumusiime who is the in-charge of the treatment center, said the cop responded positively to medication which enabled him to recover quickly .
Dr. Tumusiime said that the facility has now remained with one Covid-19 patient who is a 28 year old cargo truck driver who was intercepted at Bweyare in Kiryandongo district after entering the country from Elegu boarder around 17th May 2020.
Dr. Augustine Mutundu, the doctor managing the 3rd patient said that they are finding it hard to treat him because of his denial urging that he is suffering from Malaria.
Hoima regional referral Hospital received its first Covid-19 patient on March 28th and was discharged on April 16th.
The patient was a 48-year-old woman who had came from Dubai in early March.

Local Council chairpersons in Ntungamo district have petitioned government to increase their monthly allowance of 10,000/= to at least 50,000/= as a measure of motivation.
Gordon Gumisiriza the village chairperson cell 6 who is also former Radio journalist, raised the issue over the weekend as LCI chairpersons received their annual allowance of 120,000/= at Ntungamo municipal council hall.
Gumisiriza who is on FDC ticket, revealed that the little pay to village chairpersons across the country has facilitated corruption, bribery and conflicts in villages especially in land transactions and movement permits.
The village bosses also accused the government of not engaging them in decision making as far as project implementation and allocation is concerned.
Mwine Nathan, the Nyabubaare village chairperson expressed concern on how the government and leaders at district level have failed to consult them before allocating projects thus appealing to them to always consider the LCI chairpersons in such matters.
In response, the Mayor Ntungamo Municipality Jacob Kafureeka swallowed pride and accepted to cooperate with the chairpersons and vowed to notify them in time before the projects are rolled out in their areas of jurisdiction for proper implementation.
Mayor Kafureeka thus directed the technical staff to always avail necessary documents concerning youth livelihood and women entrepreneurship program to chairperson LCI such that they can verify the groups.
Ntungamo Municipality has 26 villages.
