Vendors operating along river Mpanga banks in Fort portal city have refused to vacate the area claiming that the lockups and stalls inside Mpanga main market where the council is forcing them are costly.
At the beginning of last week, Fort portal City Clerk, Innocent Ahimbisibwe, issued an eviction directive to vendors operating along Mpanga river banks after leaving market stalls empty and resorting to selling their merchandise from near the river, which is leading to heavy pollution and degradation of the major water source in the area.
He added that the city council is trying to develop a green belt along the river to beautifying the tourism city and protect the environment.
However, according to the vendors, Lockups in Mpanga Market go for about 150,000 Shillings a month which became expensive to force them look for an alternative.
Patrick Nyakoojo, one of the vendors, also notes that there is no space in the market to accommodate all of them.
Rose Kasemire, also a vendor operating from near the river, says the city council should add them time so that they find where to go because, currently, they are financially constrained to afford new places.
