In Kabale—

The General Secretary for National Unity Platform (NUP) in the Kigezi region Derrick Katebire has blamed the poor performance of the party in the Kigezi region to harassment by the security among the candidates in the last concluded 2021 elections.

Speaking in exclusive interview with www.mknewslink.com  reporter today in Kabale municipality, Katebire who doubles as the Kabale district Chairperson for NUP revealed that security harassment was leading factor which forced NUP to lose all the parliamentary aspirants all over the region.

Derrick confirmed that the NUP party had many contestants in the Kigezi region especially in Kanungu, Kisoro and Rubanda district but lost in the last concluded elections.

He noted that the party candidates were harassed because the ruling party recognized the party as a rebel group.

Derrick also attributed their poor performance to lack of limited time and funds to hold meetings with their supporters.

 However, Derrick said that the party is laying strategies for the growth of the party in the Kigezi region and they will carry out recruitment exercises of new powerful members through embarking on party cards and registers.

In Kampala—

The webometric has ranked Kampala International University the third best university and a leading private university in Uganda in the January 2021 webmetric university rankings.

The university follows Makerere University and Mbarara University of Science and Technology [MUST] which were ranked in 1st and 2nd positions respectively, but maintained its 1st position as a leading private university in Uganda.

In October 2020, the university was ranked the 4th best university in Uganda and this has since improved according to the January 2021 rankings.

The “Webometrics Ranking of World Universities” is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain.

CSIC is among the first basic research organizations in Europe. The CSIC consisted in 2006 of 126 centers and institutes distributed throughout Spain.

The body promotes scientific research to improve the progress of the scientific and technological level of in countries which contributes to increase the welfare of the strategies

Established in 2004, the body currently ranks 31,000 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from more than 200 countries across the globe.

The rankings are based on the university’s volume of the Web content, the visibility / openness, and the impact of web publications on the consumers.

According to the webometrics, the ranking system aims to promote academic web presence, supporting the Open Access initiatives for increasing significantly the transfer of scientific and cultural knowledge generated by the universities to the whole Society.

KIU is among the world universities benefiting from this system with online content and e-learning facilities published on the university digital website publising and other digital platforms.

In Ntungamo—

Residents of Omungyenyi trading centre Rubaare town council  in Rushenyi county are living in fear after a crocodile was sighted in their area.

According to sources, the crocodile was seen on 29^th Jan. 2021 in Omungyenyi wetland about 500 metres from Omungyenyi trading Centre.

Residents say that they now live in fear since the wetland is their source of water adding that these wild animals pose a danger to their children.

Other residents revealed that about two years ago, two of their colleagues drowned in the water but none of their bodies was recovered

 They told www.mknewslink.com that they last year saw at least three crocodiles in the wetland.

The residents ask the leaders to rush to their rescue since the situation seems alarming.

In Bushenyi—

Bushenyi Ishaka municipal town clerk David Betega has written a strong worded letter to Minister Kahinda Otafire and other plot ownerswith unfinished houses to demolish them immediately.

The town clerk explains that these unfinished houses harbor thieves and other criminals who have been a security threat in the municipality.

Otafiire’s dilapidated house is opposite Kyeitembe road near Bushenyi central police station and it has been there for over 20 years.

The town clerk Betega noted that he did not write to Otafiire alone but all other residents with dilapidated houses and undeveloped plots within the municipality have been advised to take immediate action.

“Minister Otafiire is among the people I have written to demanding that they demolish unfinished houses that harbor thieves and criminals,” Betega revealed.

He emphasized that the town must look smart therefore residents must take caution to make it clean by developing idle plots and demolishing unfinished houses.

In Mbarara—

Mbarara magistrate court presided over by His worship Samuel Twakiire yesterday dismissed with costs a vote recount application filed by Kururagire Hygiene Twongirwe who lost to Didas Tabaro in the just concluded LCV chairperson polls.

According to the results that were released by the Mbarara district Returning Officer Betty Komugyeteko, Didas Tabaro was who scored 20583 votes defeated his closest rival Kururagire Twongirwe Hygiene with a difference of 2019 votes.

Kururagire through his Lawyers of Arinaitwe Aruho and Company Advocates however petitioned the magistrate court in Mbarara challenging the results tallied on the night of 25th.Jan.2021 by electoral commission where Didas Tabaro emerged the winner. 

Nuwamanya Justus the lead counsel representing Kururagire alleged that from the evidence on ground, at some polling stations in Kashari North, the agents of the applicant were chased away.

 He added that there was no factual counting of the votes cast adding that some Declaration forms were not signed by Kururagire’s agents.

“Musinguzi Deus a supporter of the applicant gives evidence that he was beaten by the supporters of the second respondent,” Lawyer Nuwamanya noted.

Meanwhile, Lydia Ahimbisibwe a lawyer representing both electoral commission and Didas Tabaro noted that the application was null and void since most of the evidence brought to court was just hearsay and baseless 

However, Magistrate Samuel Twakire in his 40 minutes ruling, further observed that no good cause has been shown and there was  insufficient and irrelevant evidence adduced, mostly hearsay thus dismissing with costs the application for a vote recount for the Mbarara district.
