Six lions at Ishasha Sector of the Queen Elizabeth National Park in Kanungu District have been discovered lifeless.
According to UWA, the lions’ carcasses were discovered last evening with most of the body parts missing.
Bashir Hangi, the UWA communications manager said a number of vultures were found dead at the scene which created suspicion that the lions were poisoned.
“Given that some body parts of the lions were missing, we cannot rule out illegal wildlife trafficking,” Bashir noted.
He said on Saturday that a team of investigators was sent to the ground to handle the matter in collaboration with police in Kanungu District.
Bashir lamented that UWA strongly condemns the killing of the wildlife because it not only impacts negatively on country’s tourism but also revenue generation and conservation work in protected areas.
When contacted, the Senior Warden of Queen Elizabeth National Park Pontius Ezuma confirmed the death of the lions which he said was very unfortunate.
Ezuma however did not divulge more information saying that he was in a meeting to discuss the possibilities of investigations into the matter.
