PANIC IN KIKUUBE DISTRICT AFTER GIRL TESTS POSITIVE FOR CRIMEAN-CONGO HEMORRHAGIC FEVER

Kikuube district health department has confirmed an outbreak of the Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever- CCHF in Kyagwali refugee settlement in Kikuube.
Dr. Nichola Kwikiriza, the Kikuube district health officer in a statement says the victim is a 16 year old girl from Munsiinsa-A in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement.
According to the statement, on Tuesday 27/4/2021, the victim presented at Kagoma HCII with a 2 days history of fever and temperature of 38.1°c Headache, fatigue and vomiting blood and bleeding from the nose.
The victim had no history of recent travels in or even out of the settlement.
Medical personnel at Kagoma HCII made a malaria test-RDT which was negative. The patient was put in isolation at Kasonga ETU- Ebola Treatment Unit, with an impression of a suspected Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers– VHF. Blood samples were taken off and transported to Uganda Virus Research Institute.
On 28/04/2021, Lab results from UVRI returned positive PCR for CCHF, negative of Ebola and Negative of Marburg.
Kwikiriza added that nine contacts of the victim are under isolation. He has also called for calmness in the general public.
