Veteran journalist Felix Basiime has today 18th June 2021 succumbed to Covid-19.
Basiime’s brother, Mr. Festus Bandeeba, the deputy resident city commissioner said the 58-year old father of four died Friday morning at Mbarara regional referral hospital where he had been admitted for days with Covid-19 symptoms.
The hospital director, Dr. Celestine Barigye said: “We gave him all the necessary support but Covid-19 took him. His wife is a health worker at our hospital but we did all we could but failed to save his life.”

He served as Monitor Publication Ltd’s bureau chief in Mbarara and Fort Portal, won multiple awards and his reporting was recognized by the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO).
Basiime nurtured many young journalists, especially in the western part of Uganda.
Mr Otushabire Tibyangye who worked under him at Mbarara Bureau in 2001 said he was an honest man and mentor.
“He has been a straightforward person and very helpful team player. He loved his religion. He has been a loving father and very Cooperative. I met him in school when I was teaching him at St.Kagwa in 1981. I started working with him in 2001 at Daily Monitor when he was the Bureau Chief and he was a very active journalist.”
“The death of Felix Basiime is a big blow to journalism. He gave Tooro a platform in Daily Monitor and nurtured a lot of young talent. His byline remains a testament of good old journalism. Journalism has lost an activist and teacher,” fellow journalist, Mr Raymond Mujuni eulogized.

In Masindi—-
Masindi general hospital which is the only referral in the district has a sub-standard theatre which has put the lives of patients in danger.
This was revealed recently during an engagement meeting of the health workers with the Resident District Commissioner Masindi.
The referral serves the communities of Masindi, Buliisa, Kiryandongo, part of Hoima and Nakasongola.
Ms. Rose Kirabira the RDC Masindi has asked the ministry of health to consider constructing a bigger theatre at Masindi General Hospital to ease the work of medical workers.
The president’s representative noted that the theatre is too small and congested with poor ventilation, sterilization adding one can easily contract infections during operation.
“Masindi should be constructed a real theatre, when you look at the size of the theatre table, it looks too weak. I’m expecting government to assist this hospital,” She added.
Earlier, Masindi district officials wrote to the government asking for the construction of a bigger and better Masindi general hospital, but Rose Kirabira said that the construction of a bigger hospital might be a longer process adding that renovation of the Masindi theatre should be done urgently to save people’s lives.
Dr. Simon Baguma the Masindi general hospital administrator explained that people who are operated at Masindi general hospital are many compared to the cases which are referred.
He also revealed that they can have one referral in a week or don’t have, and they operate between 4 – 10 patients a day.

In Rwampara—
Police in Rwizi region are investigating circumstances under which a man was murdered in cold blood as he tried to rescue his pigs from thieves.
The deceased Alosyious Bitakamanyirwe alias Uganda aged 68 years is a resident of Buterera cell, Kibingo ward Rweibogo , Kibingo Town council, Rwampara district.
Samson Kasasira the Rwizi region police mouthpiece told journalists in a press statement that the deceased was murdered at his home on 17th June 2021 at around 01:00am.
Kasasira told www.mknewslink.com reporter that unknown assailants made an alarm that the deceased’s pigs were being stolen and as he moved out to respond, he was cut in the neck at his door step and died instantly.
Police findings indicated that the deceased could have been killed over wetlands since he has been the chairman of the committee that works with ACCORD to fight against wetland degradation.
“Some locals had owned the wetland to an extent of selling part of it to others until three days ago when NEMA officials in company of the area Resident District Commissioner decided to evict whoever was using the wetland by destroying whatever plants that had been planted there,” Kasasira noted.
He explained that this sparked anger among the area Residents who attacked families of those who advocated for their eviction including the deceased.
The scene of the crime was visited and documented by a team of police SOCO while the body of the deceased was examined, and handed over to relatives for a decent burial.
With the help of a sniffer dog, two people were arrested to help in the investigations as Police hunt for more suspects.
