In Mbarara—

Three people have today morning perished in a nasty accident at Rwemiyenje Rugando along Mbarara- Ntungamo road.

The accident involved an Isuzu bus registration number UAQ 079W that belongs to Bismarkan company, a Toyota Caridina registration number UAV 977P and a motorcycle registration number UET 535K.

ASP Samson Kasasira the Rwizi Police mouthpiece has confirmed the accident adding that both the bus and Toyota were heading to Ntungamo.

Kasasira further noted that two occupants of the Toyota Caridina and the Boda Boda Cyclist died on spot.

He said that the bodies of the trio were taken to Mbarara regional referral hospital mortuary as Police establish the exact cause of the accident.

In Rukiga—

Former state minister for Labour Herbert Kabafunzaki has jumped jail by paying 10 million shillings imposed on him by the Anti-Corruption court in Kampala as an alternative sentence after a corruption conviction.

Kabafunzaki was convicted of soliciting a Shs 5m bribe from Hamid Muhammed, the chairperson of Aya Group of Companies as an inducement to clear him of sexual abuse allegations that had been lodged against him by his former employee, about four years ago.

The complainant had filed a case before the police and reported to Kabafunzaki in his capacity as Labour minister in her pursuit for justice.

But Kabafunzaki instead sought a bribe to frustrate the case. He was arrested on April 8, 2017, together with his former political assistant, Brian Mugabo and an interior designer Bruce Lubowa after receiving the money.

During the trial, the prosecution tabled evidence showing how Kabafunzaki got the money and handed it to Mugabo but tried to hide it behind the hotel curtains when police stormed the room.

On October 8, Anti-Corruption court judge Margaret Tibulya ordered Kabafunzaki who was on the run since seven months ago, to pay a fine of Shs 10 million or serve a three-year jail term.

The court also barred Kabafunzaki from holding any public office for ten years and also asked him to forfeit the Shs 5m he paid for his bail for absconding from the court proceedings.

Justice Tibulya issued a warrant directing security agencies to arrest Kabafunzaki on sight and produce him in the court to comply with the respective orders and sentence.

In Mbarara—

25 Students of Bishop Stuart University who were remanded to Ntungamo government prison are likely to miss out on the ongoing University examinations after failing to secure themselves court bail.

The 25 are part of 29 suspect who were this week remanded by Mbarara Grade I magistrate Doreen Ainembabazi on accounts of wrongful  confinement and rescuing a person from lawful custody.

According to Rose Rwankore the Bishop Stuart University Public Relations officer,as of yesterday a total of four students managed to get bail and more are expected to be bailed out today.

She added that the University has engaged the parents of the detained students to forge a way on how they can secure bail for their children.

Rose Rwankore further said that as the university management, they will provide exams to all the jailed students as soon as they secure bail as court settles their issues.

The PRO said that exams started yesterday Wednesday and they are still on going.

In Rukungiri—

An outbreak of suspected African swine fever in Nyakagyeme sub county Rukungiri district is worrying authorities and farmers.

Dr. Cuthbert Tukundane the Sub county veterinary officer said over fifty pigs have already succumbed to the disease in the period of one and half months.

The most affected areas are in the parishes of Kigaaga and Nyakinengo where residents are counting losses.

According to Tukundane, the disease is incurable and can only be contained by stopping the movement of pigs from one place to another as well as prohibiting the slaughtering of pigs.

He noted that the major agents of the disease are birds locally known as enfunzi that move from one pig sty to the other looking for pig feeds.

He encouraged farmers to construct barriers against birds by fencing around pig sties. The signs of a sick animal are shivering, diarrhea, loss of appetite and sudden death.

As a way of reducing the death rate, authorities in Nyakagyeme have advocated for only one main pig slaughter place so that the veterinary officer can screen pigs before they are slaughtered.

Nevertheless, pork from a sick animal does not affect human health but authorities are concerned by the reduction in both pig population and production since piggery projects are sources of income to residents.

Police in Mbarara city have impounded 100 motorcycles for Operating beyond curfew time.

Lt. Col. James Mwesigye the Mbarara city, Resident City Commissioner told Journalists today in a press briefing at his office in Booma cell, Kamukuzi Division in Mbarara city that police in collaboration with UPDF had an operation last night which saw over 100 motorcycles impounded.

Mwesigye noted that operations intended to arrest those violating COVID 19 SOP’S are still on and warned those contravening curfew guidelines to desist from the habit or risk being apprehended.

The RCC stated that due to the public relaxation Mbarara city has had numbers of COVID 19 infections shoot high.

He added that as of today Mbarara regional referral hospital has 14 COVID 19 cases on admission at the hospital’s COVID 19 Isolation Unit.

The RCC said that as security teams they have ensured daily deployments of both casual and uniform errant officers to curb crime though they are still criminals terrorizing people who will be apprehended.
