Mandela secondary school Hoima on Sunday afternoon expelled 87 students for allegedly participating in a violent strike.

The communication was made by Lawrence Bategeka, the school director while addressing the parents during the Parent Teacher Association {PTA} meeting at the school.

The 87 students who are majorly in S.4, S.5 and S.6 are the ones who planned and spearheaded a violent strike at the school on July 14, 2022 that left massive destruction to the school property.

According to the school director, out of the 87 expelled students, 55 are in candidate classes and had registered to write their exams this year from the school.

‘’Those in candidate classes will only be allowed to access the school to write their final exams after paying a fine of 1.5 million shillings, even during the exams, the students will be commuting from their homes,’’ he said in the PTA meeting.

Parents welcomed the decision by the school administration to expel the ringleaders of the strike saying if they were allowed to come back, they could cause more havoc to the school.

‘’The decision taken by the school administration will act as a lesson and warning to other students and schools in the region and the country at large,’’ another parent said.

Security and the school management on July 14, 2022 resolved to close the school after students staged a violent strike.

The students staged a violent strike at 2am protesting poor feeding and administration.

Sources told our reporter that students were also angered by a move by the school administration to confiscate their mobile phones.

The PTA members resolved that the rest of the students report to school and by the time we filed this story learners were reporting back to school.

The Electoral Commission has kicked off nominations for the Bukimbiri County Member of Parliament bye-election due to take place on August 11th 2022.

The two day nomination exercise is being held at the office of the District Returning Officer, Daniel Nayebare

First to be nominated was independent candidate Asigario Turyagyenda at 10.15am .

He was accompanied by John Kamara the Bufumbira North MP and Eng Paul Kwizera Bucyana the Kisoro Municipality MP.

FDCs James Owebeyi was nominated at 10.53am .

He says that candidates to be nominated on Tuesday include NRMs Eddie Kwizera Wabahungu, Edward Mutabazi and James Mutabazi of the National Unity Platform .

Two people on Saturday perished in an accident in Kabango town council Bujenje County Masindi district.

The deceased have been identified as Paul Bagoloza mid 30’s and Simon Ayebale early 30’s, the incident happened at around 11:30am at zebra.

According to Gerald Tumwesige an eyewitness, the duo was traveling on the motorcycle from Masindi side to Kinyara.

‘’They were knocked dead by a speeding fuso lorry. The duo was travelling from the Masindi side Kinyara before the incident,’’ he explains.

Sources say that Simon Ayebale is a clinical officer at Kinyara Health Centre III and Paul Bagoloza is an out grower extension worker at Kinyara Sugar Ltd.

We could not get a comment from ASP Julius Allan Hakiza the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson by the time of publication since he didn’t respond to our repeated phone calls.
