5 POWER INSTALLATION VANDALS REMANDED OVER TERRORISM CHARGES

The chief magistrate court in Mbarara City presided over by Benjamin Seruwo ,on Thursday remanded five electricity vandals for alleged vandalism of electricity lines.
This followed the arraignment of the suspects on charges of terrorism brought against them by the government.
They are; Richard Atusasire ,27 years an electrician at Polycom Technical Engineering services and a resident of Rushambya Cell,Kashozi Parish,Ishongororo sub county, Ibanda district , Innocent Mwekambe 24 years a casual labourer and a resident of Kitwe cell,Kagongo ward , Ibanda municipality, Johnson Mutaho alias Mwine 36 years a technician with UMEME Mbarara Branch and a resident of Katete Central cell , Mbarara city , Edgar Tashobya 35 years, a driver and a resident of Nyakabungo Cell-Rutagarama ,Kakiika ward, Mbarara city north and Samuel Tumusiime 40 years self-employed and a resident of Nyakabungo cell,Kakiika ward, Mbarara city north division.The suspects pleaded guilty to the offence.
The suspects were charged with terrorism contrary to section (7)(b)and 7(2)(o) of the Anti terrorism Act,2002 as amended.
Court heard that on the 10th,day of January,2023 while at Butega II Village,Kishuro parish,Birere sub county in isingiro district the suspects for the purposes of intimidating the public for political and economic aims, indiscriminately without due regard for safety of others interfered with electric system resulting into disruption of provision of essential services to residents with electricity supply.
The chief magistrate Benjamin Seruwo thus remanded the suspects to Mbarara Main Prison Up to February,1st,2023.
The suspects were arrested from Mbarara city and Lugazi municipality ,Buikwe district following a joint crime intelligence led operation by police and UPDF.
