UPDF COURT SENTENCES SOLDIER TO 30 YEARS IN PRISON

The 2nd Division court martial sitting in Rubaare Town council Ntungamo district,on Wednesday sentenced Pte Fred Albert Eyanu 41years and a resident of Amulia district to 30 years in jail after he was found guilty of murdering a civilian and injuring another.
The court presided over by Col. Rodgers Kitwala the chairman 2nd Division Court martial found Pte Eyanu guilty of two counts which include murder and attempted murder.
The convicted soldier was attached to 33rd Battalion, Irenga.
The court found out that on December 25,2022 at around midnight, Pte Eyanu shot and killed Benard Namanya a resident of Mutojo Village, Rubaare Town council, Ntungamo district in a bar brawl as he attempted to force him out of a bar. The soldier also shot and injured the bar owner, Eric Kadugara.
Eric Kadugara, the bar owner told court that there was a disagreement between the soldier and the deceased.
Defence lawyer Lt. James Omondi requested court to hand his client a lenient sentence on grounds that he is a first time offender with a family of one wife and six children.
“This court has unanimously sentenced you to 20 years’ imprisonment on the first count of murder and 10 years’ imprisonment on the second count of attempted murder and they will be served concurrently at Mbarara main prison,” Col Kitwala further ruled.
He advised the convict to appeal against the ruling within 14 days in case he is not satisfied with the judgment.
