Bushenyi Ishaka municipal councilors on Tuesday morning squeezed the town clerk Selevestino Mukobi Byarufu to explain why the former treasurer was given his gratuity despite his failure to pay 80millions he has earlier embezzled.
The former treasurer Jackson Muhwezi Beyendeza was in 2021 convicted of stealing more than 100 million from municipal account after forging his bosses’ signatures.
He was ordered to repay the money but only paid 20million shillings and the balance is not yet seen.
The then town clerk submitted Muhwezi’s name to the district service commission to decide whether to fire him or save him. However, the district service commission instead retired him.
Now, speaking during a sitting, councilors wondered why Muhwezi was given his gratuity though the municipality still demands him.
In his defense Mukobi noted that the DPP is in charge of recovering that money from Muhwezi thus there is no way he could have held his(Muhwezi’s) gratuity.
The mayor Richard Byaruhanga suspects there was a foul play in the process of paying Muhwezi’s gratuity given the speed at which he was paid.
He advised councilors to write to the minister of local government Raphael Magyezi for action and a motion was moved to petition the minister concerning the matter.
