Police in Rukungiri district are investigating circumstances under which a 26years old man died in a police custody at Buyanja police station.

Elly Maate the Kigezi Region police spokesperson identified the deceased as Benjamin Akampa alias Kyojo a resident of Kitojo central Bugyera parish Buyanja sub county Rukungiri district.

It’s alleged that on the 24/05/ 2023 at about 05:24pm at Buyanja police station, Atweta Allan reported a case of house breaking and theft of his Hisense Television set valued at ugx1,600,000/= which was stolen by the deceased Akampa Benjamin.

Maate narrated that the complainant in conjunction with Niwamanya Ivan, Tumuhairwe Merry, Tumuhabirwe Yusufu and others started searching for the suspect.

ASP Maate said that when they called him, he revealed that he was in a bar in Marumba Trading Center where they proceeded and picked him and took him to the house of the complainant where it has been established that they allegedly beat him up.

After the deceased failed to reveal where the TV was, that’s when they took him to Buyanja Police Station at around 03:00am of the night and he was duly detained.

According to statements obtained from other suspects who were in custody, the deceased started complaining of stomach pain and was convulsing as if he was drunk.

Maate told journalists today, at around 06:00am of 25/05/2023, No. 75918 PC Cherop the night cells guard while checking off duty opened the cells and talked with the suspects including the deceased.

But later at around 07:20am, the day cells guard No.049 SPC Begumisa Bazira opened the cells and found him lying down facing up and on checking him, found that he had died.

No.049 SPC Begumisa immediately called the OC Station who also entered the cells and confirmed the death.

Maate revealed that after which, she immediately rung the DPC Rukungiri who mobilized officers and the magistrate Grade One His Worship Wakayemba Martin who is conducting the Inquest all visited the scene which was processed and documented.

The body was taken to Rwakabengo HC III mortuary for postmortem.

Meanwhile the four suspects who allegedly arrested the deceased have been arrested to aid investigations while Inquiries underway to establish the likely cause of his death.

President Museveni together with his counterpart the President of Tanzania Samia Suluhu yesterday on 25th May 2023 commissioned Kikagati- murongo 14 MW hydro power project in Ishingiro district.

The 14 MW hydro power project was constructed by the Berkeley Energy company under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) arranged by the two sister countries (Uganda and TZ). The project has consumed around $100M.

During the function of commissioning the power project President Museveni asked African leaders and Technocrats to stop being self-centered saying that it sabotages the development of Africa.

The project started in 2017 in Kikagati- Murongo located along Kagera River in at the border between Uganda and Tanzania.

KIKAGATI-MURONGO 14 MW HYDRO POWER PLANT

The project is one of the first cross- border huge infrastructural projects between the two countries.

President Samia Suluhu in her remarks applauded President Museveni’s vision for kick starting the construction of the hydro power in Isingiro which will contribute economic growth between the two countries.

She further said that her government is committed to strengthen and deepen their friendship and cooperation with Uganda.
