Kabale University is facing a severe financial crisis, with a potential loss of over 3 billion shillings from its consolidated fund, which includes school fees and other dues collected this year.

The revelation was made by Prof. Joy Kwesiga, the Vice Chancellor of the University, during her speech at the 7th graduation ceremony.

The graduation ceremony was held at the University playground in Kikungiri Hill, Southern Division of Kabale Municipality which saw a total of 1,271 graduates receiving their degrees in various courses.

The event was presided over by Prof. George Mondo Kagonyera, the University Chancellor.

Prof. Kwesiga expressed her concerns about the challenges the University faces in terms of financial sustainability.

She highlighted the University’s struggle to recover the money collected through school fees and other dues, putting them at risk of losing over 3 billion shillings. Despite efforts to secure a supplementary budget, the University has faced difficulties in obtaining the necessary funds.

According to Prof. Kwesiga, the financial situation has become a recurring problem for the institution. The University attempts to increase tax revenue during the budgeting process but has been consistently denied by the finance department. Despite providing evidence of past successful collections, the University is bound by an agreement that all funds must be remitted into the consolidated fund.

During the ceremony, Prof. Kwesiga’s concerns were echoed by Hon. Adson Kakuru, the Chairman of Kabale University council. He expressed his worries about the inadequate state of the University’s infrastructure.

Hon. Kakuru assured that the University would continue engaging with the government through the Ministry of Finance and Education to prioritize infrastructure improvement. He emphasized the need for Kabale University to receive the necessary support as a public institution.

However, Prof. George Mondo Kagonyera, the University Chancellor, took a different stance on the matter. He emphasized that the most crucial aspect of an institution is its staff and students.

Prof. Kagonyera confidently stated that Kabale University would continue to achieve its goals and objectives, regardless of the current state of infrastructure.

Regarding the graduating class, there were 754 male and 523 female graduates, highlighting a diverse group of individuals successfully completing their studies at Kabale University

The Ministry of Health, in partnership with Kabale district, is organizing a mass vaccination campaign against yellow fever under the Uganda National Expanded Programme on Immunization (UNEPI).

Alfred Besigensi, the Kabale District Health Officer (DHO), has announced that the vaccination program aims to reach approximately 200,000 people between the ages of nine months and 60 years across the district.

The campaign is scheduled to take place from June 9 to 13, 2023, at various locations including health facilities, schools, churches, markets, and community outreach programs.

DHO Besigensi emphasized the importance of the campaign, stating that it aims to protect the public against yellow fever and fulfill international travel requirements.

He highlighted that a single dose of the vaccine provides lifelong protection, eliminating the need for booster doses.

Besigensi urged the public to take responsibility for their own health and the well-being of others by participating in the vaccination program.

Uganda is one of the 14 African nations that reported yellow fever cases in 2022. Globally, 40 countries, including 27 in Africa and 13 in Central and South America, are considered high-risk for yellow fever.

Since September 2021, 13 countries in the WHO African Region have documented probable and confirmed yellow fever cases and outbreaks. Notably, there is an ongoing outbreak under close investigation in neighboring Kenya.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Uganda is classified as a high-risk country for yellow fever and is endemic to the disease.

The country falls under the Eliminate Yellow Fever Epidemics (EYE) Strategy, which aims to eradicate yellow fever outbreaks.

Uganda has a history of yellow fever outbreaks, with cases reported in various districts in recent years.

Emeritus Bishop William Magambo has condemned the Mabati thieves who included ministers, mps and other officials.

The mabati were meant for Karamoja people who are absolutely poor that even don’t have shelter.

He said this yesterday during the sendoff of Dr. Angela Karoro in Katungu Bushenyi who died at Doctors plaza hospital in Tororo at Busitema University.

The bishop condemned the act as being selfish and a disservice to the subjects who raised you in a position with copious trust. “Those who do wrong will be punished and shall have to pay”.

He emphasized that stealing as a sin before God if Christians have forgotten and as people or humans should always be faithful in serving the people we are voices to and lead.

The Bishop added that “As our time comes to go when God has called us, never look for me as Magambo in a special place of Bishops but a place I deserve according to what I have done on earth”.

Therefore, as Christians, it is time to prepare for our better places in heaven through serving as we a supposed to and doing what God wants of us.
