GEN. KAHINDA WARNS KIGEZI RESIDENTS ON UPCOMING NATIONAL IDs REGISTRATION

The Minister for Internal Affairs, Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, yesterday encouraged the public to provide accurate biographical information when registering for the new National Identification ID during the upcoming mass renewal exercise and failure to do so may result in their registration being cancelled.
While speaking, Brig. Gen. Stephen Kwiringira, the former acting NIRA Executive Director who was representing Gen. Kahinda yesterday, Thursday, during a workshop on mass enrolment and mass renewal exercises led by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) for district leaders of the Kigezi subregion, held at Bunyonyi Safaris Resort in Ndorwa West, Kabale district, said that the enrolment form is the cornerstone of citizenship registration, and we derive the mandate from the Registration of Persons Act 2015
Gen Kahinda said that refrain from making intentional and deliberate false statements with the intention to mislead enrolment officers in order to be registered as Ugandans citizens.
He warned any person who makes a false statement in order to acquire a national ID shall have their registration cancelled or imprisoned and is an offence punishable under the law.
Otafiire said that the goals of this exercise is to support the identification of persons for purposes of national planning, national security, democratization, revenue collection, citizenship and many others
Mr. Edwin Tukamuhebwa, the Manager of Registration and Operations at NIRA, represented the NIRA Executive Director, Ms. Rosemary Kisembo said that the meeting was to ensure that district leaders and stakeholders are well-informed about the upcoming registration drive so that they can effectively mobilize their communities to participate.
Ms. Rosemary said that the participation of district leaders and stakeholders is crucial in reaching out to the grassroots and ensuring that no one is left behind in this important national exercise
The nationwide national ID registration drive is expected to commence on 1st June 2024 to 30th September 2024 with NIRA working closely with local authorities to ensure a smooth and efficient process.
