A police sniffer dog in Kanungu District successfully tracked down two suspects accused of killing a 60-year-old woman after she was seen with a large sum of money.

The deceased, identified as Speria Mbabazi, was a resident of Kasiizi village, Muramba parish, Rutenga sub-county, Kanungu District. On May 26, 2024, around 07:00pm, she left Kakyere trading center. Approximately 150 meters from her home, she was ambushed and strangled with a piece of cloth.

Kigezi Region police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate stated that Mbabazi was suspected to have had money because she had recently sold part of her land for 2 million UGX. She had been seen at the trading center with her biological son, Abel Tusasibwe, buying clothes and other items.

Maate revealed that the police were notified, and after visiting the scene with a sniffer dog, they managed to track and arrest two suspects who are now in custody to assist with the investigation.

A postmortem was conducted, and Mbabazi’s body was handed over to her relatives for a decent burial while investigations are ongoing.

At least five people have lost their lives and eight others injured after they were involved in three separate accidents in Kasese district today.

The first accident happened along the Kasese-Fort Portal Highway at Makumiani in Nyamwamba Division of Kasese Municipality where three people died on spot and one other sustained serious injuries in an accident involving Sinotruck vehicle UBD 325D and a Bajaj motorcycle registration number UFP 925N.

The deceased have been identified as Morris Thembo 23, the cyclist, Allan Masereka and Isoma Boyi, all of them residents of Buhathi-Kasangali in Bwesumbu sub-county.

Mr. Daneri Muhindo, an eye witness revealed that the accident happened at around 10am when a speeding Sinotruck vehicle rammed into the motorcycle carrying two passengers and killing all of them and a cyclist on spot.

He revealed that the vehicle first knocked one cyclist and inflicted serious injuries on him before the driver lost control and eventually knocked another motorcycle.

Muhindo who is in his 60s decried the high rate of accidents along that spot and wondered why the Rukooki-Nkenda stretch does not have road humps that would help reduce the speed with which motorists move.

In another separate accident in Lower Nyangereka of Hima Town Council, two motorcycles were also involved in a head-on collision that saw the motorcyclists die on spot and four passengers who were being carried on the different motorcycles suffer injuries.

Wilson Masereka, an eye witness told our reporter that while the injured have been rushed to various medical facilities for treatment, the bodies have been rushed to Kasese Municipal Health Centre III mortuary in Kasese town for post-mortem examinations.

Meanwhile, there was a single vehicle accident along the Kinyamaseke-Munkunyu road in Bukonzo County East after a Fuso vehicle registration number UAZ 276B overturned. While the Fuso driver was rushed to Kagando Hospital in critical condition, the three occupants are being managed at Kinyamaseke Health Centre III in Kinyamaseke Town Council.

Mr James Mwiruwabo, the In-charge at Kasese Municipal Health Centre III confirmed that the facility mortuary was keeping five bodies of persons involved in separate accidents.

SP Luka Mbusa, the Acting Public Relations Officer at Rwenzori East Regional Police confirmed the deaths and highlighted the need for users to adhere to road safety guidelines so as to reduce on the number of accidents on the road.

The senior police officer cautioned motorists against overloading and speeding which he said pose a huge risk to the lives of all road users including passengers and pedestrians.

The police in Mbarara district are investigating circumstances under which a primary school teacher died in a fatal accident in the district.

According to police the deceased is Alex Mbeeta a resident of Rwebikonde village Ntura parish , Kagongi sub county in Mbarara district.

Police preliminary investigation indicate that the deceased who was riding a motorcycle registration number UEF 343R Bajaj boxer collided head-on with another motorcycle registration number UFR 015H boxer at Rugarama Trading centre in Ntura sub-county.

The police report states that Mbeeta died instantly as he succumbed to the injuries sustained at the accident.

By press time the body of the deceased was conveyed to Kagongi health centre pending postmortem.

Deo Muhwezi the Mbarara district Education officer said the deceased was a mathematics teacher at Nyaminyobwa primary school and was on his way to school when the accident happened.
