Usher Bennets Lewis, a second-year social work student at Uganda Christian University – Bishop Barham University College (UCU-BBUC) in Kabale, has been announced as the Guild President for the 2024-2025 academic year.
Bennets Lewis won the election with 176 votes, representing 39% of the total vote. Derrick Akampa, a second-year Bachelor of Education student, scored 162 votes (36%) as a second candidate while Isaac Ampurira, also a second-year Bachelor of Education student, finished in third place with 111 votes (25%). Two votes were disqualified after being found folded together, indicating a possible attempt at duplicate voting, as both votes were marked for the same candidate.
Announcing the results on campus, Mr. Gerald Irimaso, Chairman of the Electoral Commission at UCU-BBUC, expressed concern over the low voter turnout. Although 1,350 ballot papers were printed, only 753 students were eligible to vote, and of these, just 451 votes were cast. Mr. Irimaso attributed the low turnout to a lack of motivation, suggesting that the candidates’ campaigns did not engage students as expected.
Speaking after his victory, Usher Bennets Lewis expressed his commitment to working with UCU-BBUC’s administration to promote campus development. He also indicated that he plans to seek guidance from the outgoing Guild leadership where necessary.
In his address to the student body, Rev. Robertson Peter Agaba, Dean of Students at UCU-BBUC, commended the Electoral Commission for organizing a peaceful election. He encouraged those who did not win to stay hopeful, reminding them that they are in a transitional phase as university students and should continue to act professionally.
Rev. Agaba urged the newly elected Guild President to focus on campus development and to foster unity among students.
