The territorial police in Kisoro have arrested an SGA security guard who had been on the run for alleged involvement in the attempted murder of two people over accusations of witchcraft.
The victims, identified as 58-year-old builder Bizimana Charles and his wife, 47-year-old Nyiramugisha Christine, both residents of Mugombero Village in Gahiza Parish, Nyakabande Sub-County, Kisoro District, were reportedly targeted by 25-year-old Joshua Musimenta, an SGA security guard now held at Kisoro Police Station.
According to a police statement, on November 13, 2024, at around 2:00 a.m., Bizimana noticed a light shining on their rented house in Chuho Village while he and Nyiramugisha were sleeping. When he went outside to investigate, he found Joshua, the security guard with whom he had a long-standing dispute, armed with a gun. Joshua allegedly shot Bizimana on the right side of his ribs.
The Kigezi Region police spokesperson, Elly Maate, informed journalists this morning that Bizimana called for help, which alerted his wife, Nyiramugisha. As she stood at the door, Joshua reportedly shot her in the left breast before fleeing the scene.
The victims were rushed to Mutolere Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. Police report that Joshua and the victims had a prolonged conflict, as Joshua believed they were practicing witchcraft on his family. This was reportedly the second time he had attacked them at their home.
Emmanuel Habimana, who reported the incident, notified the police. Officers visited and documented the crime scene, recorded witness statements, and recovered two spent cartridges, a live bullet, and the rifle, which was later found with one of Joshua’s colleagues.
Police stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the full motive behind the attack and why the security guard intended to kill the civilians.
