8 PEOPLE PERISH, TWO INJURED IN KISORO LANDSLIDES

Police in Kisoro district are investigating circumstances under which eight people died and two others injured due to landslides.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Maate identified the deceased as Owamaria Gilades aged 25years, Tuyizere Jason aged 17years student, Mucunguzi Gildasi aged 15years student, Yaturinze Junior aged 15years.
Others include Tumuhimana Desire aged 11years, Nyiranzara Provia aged 53years, Uwineza Rachel aged 7years pupil, kazungu Nelson aged 21years student and the injured are Sehene Daniel aged 49years and Nyirabwengye Hope.
Maate told journalists that It’s alleged that on the 3rd May 2023 at around 1:00pm during heavy downpour, a mudslide hit the home of Mr Tibarikure Gabudiozi, the chairperson Lc1 of biizi village, Chibumba parish, he was not in the house at that time but his wife Nyirabwenje hope together with the three of his children, Owamaria Gladys,Twizere Jason,Mucunguzi Gilidasi.and his granddaughter Tumuhimana Desire were in the house.
The wife managed to run out but the three children and the granddaughter died therein.
Maate adds that during the mud slide a couple, one Sehene Daniel and his wife Nyanzara Provia were walking past the home of the chairman and were pushed by the mudslide towards the house of the chairman and the woman also died there.
He added that Residents managed to rescue Mr Sehene Daniel who was rushed to Chahafi health center IV for treatment and the wife of the chairman was also rushed to Mutolere Hospital and is getting treatment
Maate adds that in another parish of Gihuyaga village, Kagaro Parish, Murora Subcounty one Kazungu Nelson an S.6 student was in a house that was hit by a mudslide and also died on spot.
Also, one Uwineze Rachael, a resident of Kabyaza village, karago Parish, Murora Subcounty a P.1 pupil at karago primary school was also in a house that was hit by a mudslide and died therein.
The landslide generally affected three villages that are Biiz, Gihunga and kabyaza all in murora sub-county Kisoro District.
Both Scenes visited by officers from Cps Kisoro and Postmortem done at the different scenes and bodies handed over to the relatives for burial.
