Women councillors in Masindi District have resolved to petition the Minister for Presidency demanding for the transfer of the Masindi Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Godfrey Nyakahuma.
26 councillors both at sub-county and district levels led by the district deputy speaker, Mary Mujumura reached the resolution after Nyakahuma blocked their training on women leadership that was organised yesterday by the Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE), a non- governmental organisation.
The training that was scheduled to take place at the district Education Hall in Masindi town was to be facilitated by among others;the Kasese district woman Member Parliament, Winnie Kiiza, an opposition legislator.
But Nyakahuma blocked it before it could start.
The RDC who was flanked by the officer in charge of operations at Masindi police station, Silas Besimbire said he could not allow the training to go on calling it an illegal assembly.
Pleas by the organisers and the women councillors with the RDC to allow the training continue fell on deaf ears after Nyakahuma allegedly told them that he was waiting for a presidential clearance.
This annoyed the participants with some accusing Nyakahuma of frustrating the women development and empowerment in the district.
Mujumura who also criticised Nyakahuma’s act revealed that the women councillors resolved to petition the Minister for Presidency to have Nyakahuma transferred from Masindi district.
She added that women had also resolved to employ other means of expressing their dissatisfaction with Nyakahuma in case he is not transferred. These include among others; moving out of district councils that Nyakahuma will be attending.
Hafisa Karungi, the Masindi district secretary for social services, who is also the female district councilor for Central and Nyangahya Divisions threatened to move a motion in the district council calling for Nyakahuma’s rejection as Masindi RDC.
Nyakahuma advised the petitioners to go ahead with their plan.
