FAMILY NARRATES LAST MOMENTS OF IGANGA SLAIN DOCTOR
In Iganga
The four days before Dr Ibra Gwalukas murder, the former treasurer of Uganda Medical Association (UMA) in the Busoga sub-region, were weirdly nightmarish.
Dr Gwaluka who was the officer in-charge of Kigandalo Health Centre IV, was allegedly tormented by deathly hallucinations.
Dr Gwaluka was shot down on Friday night as he arrived home with his wife, a magistrate. Dr Gwalukas wife escaped unhurt.
Mr Yusuf Naleeba, the deceaseds brother-in-law, said that Friday was a normal day for Gwaluka who woke up, had breakfast with the family, went to work at his pine farm, returned home for lunch before heading out to the trading centre for an appointment.
Naleeba is a brother to Ms Jalia Namusali, Gwalukas widow.
On his way back after work, he called his wife who had gone for medical treatment at one of the health centres in town. They agreed to meet at Mr Mugolofas place. At 8pm they drove home, Naleeba recounts.
Mugoloofa is a renowned businessman in Iganga Town.
Naleeba said he did not bother to get details about the couples conversation as he was driving to their home in Bulubandi Centre, Iganga Municipality.
He said that the couple met at Mugoloofas shop in Iganga Town from where they headed home.
As they approached the main gate, the Grim Reaper pounced. The hallucinations that had haunted Dr Gwaluka for the past four days were now a reality.
Ms Namusali told her brother that she heard her husband shouting that there was an assassin holding a gun, standing behind one of the flowers on the fence, aiming at their car.
Namusali narrated that she jumped out of the car and heard a gunshot. She run for her life as the assassin pursued her. She hid in a nearby toilet. Since Gwaluka was still wailing and calling for help, the gunman turned and came back to finish the mission after failing to trace her whereabouts. He shot him a couple of times. According to the people who were in the house, the assassin opened the door to confirm the Gwaluka was dead before he sped off.
Police spokesperson, Emilian Kayima confirmed the shooting, saying that they had already commenced their investigations into the matter.
We have not yet arrested anyone but the officers are on ground trying to investigate the case. We so far do not know the motive behind this act and the killers are still on the run. We request the public to give any clues that can help ease the work of police, Mr Kayima said.
Gwaluka will be laid to rest at his ancestral home in Nsinze Village, Namutumba District.
