Kabale Regional Referral Hospital has temporarily suspended x-ray services due to lack of x-ray developer and fixer that help the machine to operate leaving several patients stranded.
A developer solution is used in the darkroom for developing x-ray films used in conventional radiography while the x-ray fixer is a mix of chemicals used in the final step in the photographic processing of film or paper.
The fixer stabilizes the image, removing the unexposed silver halide remaining on the photographic film or photographic paper, leaving behind the reduced metallic silver that forms the image.
According to the Acting Kabale Regional Referral Hospital director Dr. Marion Namutebi, the hospital did not receive x-ray developer and fixer in recent National Medical Stores delivery but that all necessary arrangements are being done to place an
emergency order.
“This has left several patients in need of X-ray services stranded. The patients are now forced to go to private hospitals which charge high costs for the services, unlike at the referral hospital, where the service is free of charge,”Namutebi added.
Peninah Kyomuhendo, a resident of Bufundi Sub County in Rubanda district whose son is among the affected patients said that her son was supposed to undergo an operation this week, but she was told that her son need to go for an x-ray before the operation.
Kyomuhendo said that she was told by the medical staff at the hospital that the machine would be working before the end of this month.
