This was revealed by Lawrence Tusiimeomuhangi the district the district Entomology officer while talking to www.mknewslink.com in his office at Tsetse control unit today.
Tusiimeomuhangi says Silk production was introduced in Uganda in 1993 adding that it has succeeded in many districts like Rubirizi, Bushenyi, Iganga, Palisa among others.
He adds that they are going to first demonstrate on an acre at Tsetse control unit in Nyangahya cell so that other farmers will come to know about it. He says Silk is a project which can be managed by any farmer since it doesnt require a lot of money.
He also explains that silk project needs a farmer to grow Mulberry plants(morisalba) then introduce insects known as Silk worms (bombyxmoric)which feed on the leaves that later defecate as silk which is converted into clothes.
Tusiimeomuhangi also notes that there is enough market for silk meaning silk produced in Masindi district will be bought by the available textile industries in Uganda.
He further explains that they are going to develop a strategic plan which will be presented to council such that it can allocated funds adding that at the initial stage Ministry of agriculture is going to give them some support.
Moses Kirya the district council speaker who visited Entomology offices today to understand more about the project said that since they are in the planning stage they are going to ensure that the project is considered.
