HEAVY RAINS DESTROY HOUSES, CROPS IN RUKUNGIRI

More than 40 houses and several crop gardens were yesterday destroyed by Heavy rains in Buhunga sub- county Rukungiri district.
The heavy rains that were characterized by strong winds and hailstorm started pounding the area in the afternoon hours.
The rains destroyed houses and devastated about forty acres of crop gardens.
The affected areas are Omurusheshe, Kyaruyenje, Bwanda and Rugando parishes among others.
Jackline Beinamaryo, a resident of Omurusheshe parish said that the roof of her house was blown off and her entire banana, coffee plantations were seriously destroyed by the heavy downpour.
Samuel Muhumuza, a resident of Bwanda parish said that his kitchen was hit by a tree that was a few meters away.
Muhumuza added that he is worried of how to get school fees and food for his family since the banana and coffee plantations were his major source of income.
Top Kangye, the sub- county chairperson told our reporter that this disaster is a heavy blow to food production in the area since Omurusheshe is the food basket of the sub- County.
Kangye added that a team of sub- county officials led by the community development officer is already on ground documenting the damage and it will be submitted to district disaster department to offer assistance to the affected families.
Charles Andrewson Katebire , the district chairperson said that the affected residents are in need of urgent help.
He said that consultation with relevant offices are underway so that the support to the affected residents is got.
