SHEEMA DISTRICT FINALLY PUT UNDER LIVESTOCK QUARANTINE

Sheema District has been put under livestock quarantine following the cases of foot and mouth disease that were detected in three farms in Kyagyenyi subcounty in the parishes of Muzira and Kagongi.
The quarantine was confirmed by Sheema Resident District Commissioner Frank Besigye Kyerere during a press conference held yesterday evening at Kibingo ,Sheema District headquarters
Kyerere noted that they came to the decision following a letter from the permanent secretary of the ministry of agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries notifying them of suspected foot and mouth in the district ,asking them to take action.
He further said that as district officials they have banned the movement of animals with in the district.
Speaking to Journalists Can. David Kabigumira, the district Chairman revealed that they have dispatched a team of veterinary doctors to continue monitoring the rest of the farms in the district.
He noted that the samples of blood from various farms have been so far collected and taken to Entebbe laboratory for diagnosis.
Sheema is the second district in greater Bushenyi to be put under livestock quarantine after Bushenyi district.
Foot and mouth disease has so far been detected in the districts of Mbarara, Kiruhura,Kazo ,Ibanda, Bushenyi and lately Sheema.
