Retired Judge of the High Court Cosmas Kato Matongo passed on yesterday at Naalya International Hospital in Kampala, where he has been receiving medication for long time.
His death was announced by Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom last evening.
“Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom announces the untimely death of Justice Cosmas Kato who has been a member of the Kingdom’s Royal Commission. He passed on today (Friday) in Kampala where he has been receiving medication,” the kingdom’s announcement made by Owek. Andrew Byakutaga Ateenyi, the Prime Minister, reads in part.
The announcement further reads: “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives and friends of the deceased. We shall miss him dearly. May the Lord grant him eternal peace.”
Matongo Kato during his early years had a humble beginning starting as a Parish chief in the mid 1960’s up to the Justice of the Supreme Court in 2016 when he retitred.
When the scarcity of judicial officers arose shortly after Uganda’s independence in 1962, the local government officials who were at the level Sub-county chief who had the competencies were enlisted as Magistrate grade II’s.
This is how Justice Kato who had been a Sub-county chief of Miirya Sub-county and his contemporary the late Muhiigwa of Pakanyi Sub-county, Masindi became Magistrates in the mid 1960’s.
Muhiigwa whose home is at Kinogozi village in Karujubu Division in Masindi Municipality died early at the level of a chief magistrate but Kato rose through the judicial ranks up to Justice of the Supreme Court until his retirement in 2016.
