In Kabarole—
Residents of Buhara A Bwanika Parish Kicwamba Sub County in Kabarole district are crying foul as a strange banana disease has hit their area.
According to the residents, the banana fruits turn yellowish as if they are ripe and others turn rust brown.
One of the residents only identified as Enid said that the affected fruits first appear as grey and dusty turning rusty. She says as the fruits continue to grow, sometimes the peel cracks.
Coupled with effects of COVID 19, the unidentified disease is adding another layer of financial losses to farmers by rendering the affected bananas unmarketable.
They said they have on several occasions sought help from extension officers from their area but they are yet to receive any help.
The chairperson of the village Charles Aheebwa said the disease has for around two months ravaged a lot of plantations.
He said he talked to the sub county agricultural officer who affirmed to him that the disease would disappear on the onset of rain which has not been the case.
The Chairperson LC III Kicwamba sub county Jack Magezi said they are working with the district authorities to find a lasting solution to the problem.
