NTUNGAMO ONION TRADERS PROTEST DEMOLITION OF THEIR STALLS IN RWAHI-RWENTOBO TOWN COUNCIL

Traders in the Rwahi-Rwentobo Town council in Ntungamo District have accused Chairperson Edson Turyasingura of demolishing their stalls.
The more than 50 stalls were constructed in 2020 under the directives of the former Chairperson Nicholas Asiimwe Mwamba and his council.

The traders who deal in onions and Matooke, were on Friday shocked to find their stalls demolished.

the town council chairperson and his council ordered for the demolition of the stalls without giving them prior notice.

Atukwatse says every trader paid 30,000 Shillings to the council for space to construct a stall

Diana Kanyesigye, says that following the demolition, she has no place where to sell her items from. Kanyesigye also says that she invested a lot of money in constructing the stalls to protect her items goods from dust and rain.

Sylvia Nalongo, another trader says that the destruction comes at a time when they were struggling to sell their food items due to the covid-19 lockdown.

However, Edson Turyasingura, Rwahi-Rwentobo Town council Chairperson defended the demolition.

He said that the traders have not been paying taxes to the town council.

He added that they don’t have a list of the traders operating from the stalls.

Rwahi-Rwentobo was elevated to a Town council status in July 2017 from Kayonza Sub County.
