PANIC AMONG BUNYORO PARENTS AS POLIO OUTBREAK IS REPORTED IN SUB REGION

Polio outbreak has been reported in Bunyoro subregion despite the government’s efforts to kick the deadly disease out of the country for more than three decades.
Dr. John Turyagumanawe the Bunyoro Region Epidemic Response Coordinator explains there is a gap in Kakumiro and Masindi districts in Bunyoro subregion in sensitizing the community on the dangers of polio outbreak.
The health expert further explained that the ministry of health has come up with the supplementary immunization campaign, and also encouraging health experts to strengthen the surveillance system to be able to detect cases of polio to prevent the consequences.
He added polio is deadly and it also attack nerves, brain, and respiratory system. He however explains that it can be kicked out of the country if immunization of children below years, and sensitization is done.
Dr. Brian Mugisha the Assistant District Health Officer In charge of child and maternal health Masindi district explained that they will have a campaign in the course of this month, but dates are yet to be set.
He added that they shall be moving house to house immunizing children below five years.
“The house to house immunization exercise is going to be done country wide, but for the case of Masindi, we haven’t registered any case of polio,” he adds
The health expert also explained that immunization of children is still ongoing at different health facilities, and he has asked parents to take their children for vaccination.
