In Kanungu…
Police in Kanungu District are currently holding a man who tragically killed his own son over a dispute involving a small sum of money.
Agaba Onacklet, a 46-year-old resident of Kazirankye village in the Northern ward of Kanungu town council, has been identified as the father of the deceased, Ivan Nuwagaba, a 10-year-old student at Karuhinda Primary School.
According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region police spokesperson, today morning told journalists that on June 28, 2023, at approximately 10:00 a.m. the suspect sent his son to purchase cigarettes worth 1000 Ugandan shillings (UGX).
However, the son returned with cigarettes worth only 500 UGX and consumed the remaining balance which angered the father, who began threatening to harm his son whenever he got the chance.
Out of fear, the deceased had been avoiding his father, constantly running away from him. Sadly, on July 2, 2023, around 1:00 p.m., the father targeted his son while he was alone in Kanyangyende village in the Northern ward of Kanungu town council.
The father stealthily grabbed him and strangled him using a rope. He then staged the incident to look like a suicide, hanging the body from a mango tree with the rope loosely tied, allowing the victim’s legs to touch the ground comfortably.
Upon being alerted by Hellen Ayebare, the area chairperson, the police promptly arrived at the crime scene. They documented the evidence and conducted a post-mortem examination.
The suspect was subsequently arrested and is currently being detained pending prosecution. Ongoing inquiries are being conducted to gather more information about the case.
The police spokesperson emphasized that a murder case has been registered at Kanungu District Police station under reference number CRB 455/2023.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of resolving conflicts in a peaceful and non-violent manner, especially within families.
