MBARARA REFERRAL HOSPITAL LAB RECEIVES INTERNATIONAL ACCREDITATION

The south African National Accreditation System (SANAS) has accredited the Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital Laboratory to the International standards.

Laboratory accreditation is highly regarded both nationally and internationally as a reliable indicator of technical competence to handle verified and credible patient tests and results.

Over the years, Mbarara hospital has been struggling with concerns about correct results , especially after conducting tests on patients and health related research among other things.

Therefore on Thursday, December 7th,2023 the south African National Accreditation System approved Mbarara hospital as an international standard based hospital.

This accreditation was based on qualified equipment such as the bio base that deals in the rapid extraction of viral DNA or RNA from plasma,serum,urine ,ascites,cell culture fluid, supernatant,and cell free body fluid;the roto fix incubators used for routine laboratory applications,GeneXpert machine;which is a rapid molecular test that allows detection of multi-resistant tuberculosis and simultaneously detects resistance to the antibiotic rifampicin,all in less than two hours.

Other parameters that were considered included the standard test procedures and qualified doctors as well as the medical united staff ,to which the hospital scored well in enabling it to be considered as the best Hospital in Ankore region.

The hospital was accredited based on the Eleven tests that included HIV testing,and screening , Hepatitis B and malaria where so far results will not be doubted as per the revelation from SANAS.

Addressing the press in the hospital’s board room on Thursday,Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital Director,Dr.Celestine Barigye appreciated teamwork exhibited towards achieving the milestone so far.

He encouraged stakeholders and other partners to come in and support the hospital’s progress.

Robert Wagubi who represented the laboratory staff at Mbarara regional referral hospital pledged to uphold the accreditation status of the hospital’s Lab.
