Local leaders from some sub counties that recently experienced landslides in Kasese district have asked the Ugandan government to resettle all the displaced persons in their respective areas of jurisdiction.
The landslides that affected most sub counties including Bugoye, Maliba, Kyondo, Kyarumba and Nyakabingo among others left 5,369 people displaced and are currently encamped at various centers and also left 13 people dead.
Mr. Robert Mubunga Kiryamuthaka, the Maliba Sub- county Chairperson says that at least 764 people in his area were left homeless and subsequently encamped at Kyabikuha and Buhunga primary schools.
Mubunga suggests the government devise any means of resettling the victims and other people living in disaster prone areas.
According to him, varieties of both food and cash crops were also destroyed by the heavy rains that befell the area.
Similarly, the District Councilor representing Mahango Sub-county, Mr. Jeremiah Bwambale Bwanandeke, whose sub-county was also affected, revealed that the victims have sought refuge at Lhuhiri Primary School.
He also appealed to the relevant district authorities to go on ground and assess the impact of floods on infrastructure and thus forge a way forward.
