MBARARA REGIONAL REFERRAL HOSPITAL STARTS HEART SURGERIES

The uganda Heart Institute(UHI) has started closed heart surgeries at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.

This is the second time the institution has conducted surgeries at the facility, with the first occurrence being last year when 10 surgeries were performed. These procedures have helped many people from the western region avoid traveling long distances to receive heart disease treatment at UHI in Kampala.

The program was officially announced in a joint media briefing  chaired by Dr Peter Lwabi the UHI  deputy Executive Director and attended by heart specialists from Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital and UHI in the hospital board room on Wednesday.

Dr Lwabi told the  press that the move is significant achievement for UHI on its ongoing mission to provide essential heart healthcare to communities across the country.

About 12 surgeries  are expected to be  carried out before Friday this week and by press time ,09 children born with a congenital heart defect had successfully been operated on.

According to Dr Elias Kumba Kumba  a senior paediatrician and child health at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital ,the children were in good condition.

He says they have lost many children to heart disease .He reported that Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital heart clinic, have received about 2,000  children with  heart condition ever since the clinic began.
