The celebrations of Valley University of science and technology for acquisition of the charter from president Museveni and National council of higher education were dominated by legacies of Dr. James Musiguzi Garuga who was chancellor and late canon Karooro was member of one of the governing organs of the university.
Prof. Kanyesigye who represented the university council chairperson told the students, staff and invited guests who included TWO West Ankole diocesan emeritus Bishops Magambo and Katoneene that when things were very hard Garuga sponsored 300 students from Kanungu an d donated 100m and this gave a relief to the university to move on.
He noted that late Dr Musiiguzi Garuga sponsored the entertainment for the last five graduations that included food, drinks for the students, graduands parents and invited guests.
He also added that the wise counsel of late canon Karooro that took the university further than it wouldn’t be now.
The late Dr Garuga was represented at the function by his son Eng. Johnie Garuga as well as a great friend of the family Captain Hon Charles Byaruhaga.
Capt Charles Byaruhanga told the gathering that the university secretary Jonan Mubehamwe sent him a copy of the acquired charter and in turn showed it to late Garuga in hospital. He commented that “ I can now comfortably retire from chancellorship of VUST because it has acquired the highest level of higher institutions”.
Eng Johnie hailed the public and the university for burying his father in the most dignified manner.
Inturn when Mzee Mukira 96 stood up to speak he said late Garuga will never be forgotten because he left Eng Johnie and the rich legacy that will never be rubbed in the heads of Ugandans and beyond there is the late Gorogoza who did great things in Kigezi whose legacy has never been rubbed in the history of Kigezi and Uganda
The family of the late canon Karoro was represented by professor Emmanuel Karoro and his wife Dora karoro . Professor Karoro is the head of post graduate Studies at vust.
The vice chancellor vust told the gathering that the charter acquired is the highest accolade for all higher institutions therefore parents should bring students to study post graduate ,undergraduate courses that are competitive in the job market.
The chief guest Prof Sabiti noted that valley university with a charter is able to get grants and donations from the government of Uganda and as well as from international organizations
