HOIMA FORMER JOURNALIST ARRESTED OVER AGE LIMIT DEBATE

Police yesterday blocked a planned debate to deliberate on the presidential age limit bill in Hoima Hoima.
Police also arrested the debate organizer Ausi Balyesiima; the team leader Hoima Concerned Citizen Group.
Balyesiima; a retired journalist formerly working with Radio Hoima had
organized the debate for the public to deliberate on the presidential
age limit bill because the municipality member of parliament Dr
Lawrence Bategeka had not consulted citizens over the matter.
However few hours before the debate could start, anti-riot police
sealed off the venue at Hoima Boma grounds, forcing participants who had turned up to flee the venue as police arrested the head Balyesiima and impounded the tents among other equipment.
Although some people allege that police arrested over three people but
Bernard Akankwasa; the Hoima district police commander says only
Balyesiima was arrested.
Akankwasa explained that Balyesiima was arrested for convening a public
meeting without information police as per the Public Order Management Act.
By press time, activists were flocking Hoima police station where Balyesiima is being detained.
Balyesiima claims he had written to
regional police commander informing police about today’s event after being advised by Hoima police commander.
Government last month offered sh29 million to every Member of
Parliament to consult their voters about the controversial proposed
constitutional amendment of article 102 (b) which among others seeks
to lift presidential age limit.
Although most MPs in Hoima conducted only one consultative meeting for a selected leaders, a section of the residents are accusing their MPS
of not consulting them over the matter.
